Hey, sorry for my half cooked post earlier, was in between things. I agree with almost everything mentioned above by IanStewart. Thank you for your thorough post.

IanStewart
There normally isn't much reason to take a dozen practice tests during prep, though it can depend on the test taker. If you know precisely what you need to work on (CR and RC, say), you'll make the most progress by focusing on official questions, and solving and analyzing them outside of a test setting. You should take diagnostic tests primarily to work on pacing strategy, and to get a realistic score assessment when you're wondering if you should book a real test. Official tests are the only ones you can use for either of those purposes. Unless you need to take a lot of practice tests to get comfortable with test taking, with working from a computer screen, etc, there should be enough official tests available that you can just use those.

I agree that for section-specific improvement there’s more to be gained by focusing on the individual section’s question bank.

I also think that most test taker require more than the 6 mock tests provided by GMAC. As most of them take 1 cold test and are left with only 5. It is really subjective to the individual, but taking more than 5 test is necessary during the prep. You’ll need to take a 1-2 test between your prep, to gauge improvement levels or for re-analyzing and re-strategizing the prep plan. Moreover, you’ll need a few more closer to your exam, to develop your stamina for the long test, to improve timing strategies and get comfortable with the exam. Hence, in the fear of running out of official mock tests, most students are forced to go for third party mock tests. However, I do agree that the third party test result should be taken with a pinch of salt and should be used more for developing stamina, practicing strategies and getting comfortable with the test.

Have you taken any of the official GMAC practice exams? If not, you plan to take all 6 prior to your GMAT?

Hey everyone,

I took 4 Kaplan mocks and scored 630, 620, 710, and 720. I just took the official mock 1 and got 650 (Q49 V30). I lost my score in easy/medium questions because I got stressed and scared. I wrote my Kaplan mocks well (3rd and 4th). Can I trust Kaplan mocks a bit or the OG one is the best?

Fair to say the Official Mocks best represent what you'll see on the actual exam. Might be worth checking out some of the similar queries on gmatclub:

These weren't mocks but here's someone who went from similar score (Q50 V31) to a Q50 V40. Maybe some quick tips you can take.

The OG mocks are far more reliable, as both the questions themselves and the scoring algo mirror what you'd see on test day. Good luck!

The OG mocks are the most reliable, so I would focus on taking those.
