I took my first Kaplan test today from their online test bank and have some major concerns. Here is my break down:

610 overall
Quant - 38 (77% below)
Verbal - 39 (89% below)

My first concern is obviously how low the score is. I've been reading about the apparent discrepancy between Kaplan's tests and the actual GMAT. Have others experienced the same thing as of late? I don't want to use the gmatprep tests till I'm more prepared, but is the scoring discrepancy still a big issue here?

My second concern is whether the online tests from Kaplan are much different in terms of difficulty compared to the CD that comes with Kaplan's premier program.

Lastly, what the heck is __% below that Kaplan provides with it's scores? If the percentage correlates with the actual gmat percentage rates, then my score would have been 700 or thereabouts. Any thoughts?

I also received a low score on my first Kaplan test, low 600's. I think it was a 620. I found that I could still raise my score on Kaplan tests. I peaked at 690 on Kaplan. Other tests were signficantly easier to score well on, especially the two supplied with your registration. I got as high as 770 and 780 on other practice tests towards the end of my studying, ultimately getting a 730. Hope that helps. Good luck! Save some energy for essay writing... it is the most arduous part.

Hey Yaeerlev,

Thanks for your two cents. Yeah, after reviewing the practice test, I realized I made stupid mistakes on 6 questions (4 quant, 2 verbal)...the others I missed were due to lack of preparation. So, there is hope! :) I still would like to know how closely correlated the percentile below rankings from Kaplan are to the percentile rankings of the actual GMAT. Oh, and any advice on whether to take practice tests from the CD or online version of Kaplan if I had to choose?

I did a quant test today from an older Kaplan CD (2007 - I think). The PS went fine and of the 20 questions, I believe I got 18 correct. However, I was floored on the DS. I had the timer up on my screen to I could keep track of time, and I simply ran out of time at Q16. That is 4 skipped questions, and due to the running time, I had 3 errors too.

Then later, when I examined my individual answers, I noticed that my average in each question was slightly under 2 mins. It turns out that Kaplan was allocating 25 minutes for 20 DS questions. And some of these were definitely 650+ questions. I don't get it. Is this supposed to be accurate or help you improve speed? Shouldn't the allocation be closer to 35-40 minutes? I just found it bizarre.

I think I will stick to Gmat Club, MGMAT, and GMAT Prep from now.
