This one is recent: mgmat-cat-vs-kaplan-cat-150348.html?fl=similar

However, there were some changes and I believe continuous tweaking is going on based on what members have reported. I don't think it will be super useful/precise. GMAT Prep is really the only way for now.

Can people share their experiences that have taken both Kaplan and MGMAT tests

From what I've heard the quant on kaplan is easier compared to MGMAT

Whereas, the verbal portion is tougher...

Is this true?

Can someone comment on the questions SC,CR,RC etc of kaplan / MGMAT and how was the quant section...

Hello Fozzzy,

I took my GMAT at the end of August 2013 and I used Both Kaplan tests and MGMAT tests. It is true that the quants in Kaptest are way too easy when compared to the Original.
Also I seemed to realize that the algorithm used by Kaptest has larger variation from the original test or gmat prep than the MGMAT.Hence, in Kaptest, you tend to have an inflated to score. (I score close to 700 & once got 720 whereas in MGMAT I got 670. Prep score is 650) MGMAT quants really test you with some tough problems. MGMAT verbal questions are good, on par with the GMAT.

Nevertheless, Kaplan book is very good for the Verbal section especially CR & RC. The methodology is good in Verbal. Also Kaplan book got few examples & problems for Integrated Reasoning.

Hi Fozzzy,

I've taken the free MGMAT and Kaplans recently. I've attached my scores below - perhaps you can make some deductions from it.

In general, I feel like my Kaplan scores (the one out of 800) are inflated. However, I can't advise if one is easier than the other, but I found both Kaplan and MGMAT to be great practice exams to take. My only issue with Kaplan revolves around how you can't move the calculator in IR. For MGMAT my issues were that I couldn't use the keyboard for the calculator and I had to always select the radio button (as opposed to the text/line). There were some other nuisance with the MGMAT user interface, but out of all the different CATs I've taken, these two were by far the best (not counting GMATPrep, of course). The next best CAT was The Economist, but perhaps their verbal was easier (hence my better score?) and they lacked AWA and IR. I'd stay away from Veritas' IR section completely, but their Quant/Verbal were okay. GMAT Pill's free exam was terrible - stay away from that one.

Yeah, you can just go to https://gmat.economist.com/ and sign up. You'll get a free 7-day trial with them plus a free test, which you can take well past the 7-day trial.

I thought the test was good. I was a bummed that they didn't have an AWA or an IR section, but the quant and verbal seemed fine. They may have both been a tad on the easy side, but it's hard for me to tell (I'm basing this on the fact that I finished quant way earlier than I normally do and that my verbal score seems to be higher than normal).

I really liked their review user interface that after the exam. It's the best one out of the tests I've taken. I liked how everything is on one page. Most exams you have to do a lot of back and forth reviewing the problems you got wrong. You can just click on a problem and it'll expand and show the problem below. Then they'll give their explanation of that problem on the side. Then you can click on each answer choice to see the explanation behind why that answer choice was correct or incorrect. Picture is worth a thousand words: https://i.imgur.com/ChggjOu.png I also liked how they highlighted the times for ones where you took too long.

Edit: Oh yeah, another tiny quick complaint. I didn't finish the verbal in time and left the last question unanswered. Now, unfortunately, this last question doesn't appear on the review :(

Comments on individual section of Kaplan and MGMAT

Kaplan quants are on the easier side. Tricky questions close to what you can expect on the real exam. Too many geometry questions ( around 12), you won't get that many on the real GMAT. The algorithm takes sometime to take off ( not as quick as MGMAT)
Kaplan Verbal is definitely a notch higher when compared with MGMAT. The passages are shorter but dense. SC and CR was good.

MGMAT quant has a lot of tough questions. If you manage to get the first 2-3 questions correct you start getting 750 level questions...
MGMAT verbal SC is really good, CR and RC passages are longer ( especially RC you have some really long passages)

Analysis at the end of the exam - MGMAT wins over here. Their analysis is much more detailed...

IF I could make a perfect mock test I would take the quant of kaplan and SC from MGMAT, CR and RC from kaplan lol
