Awesome, the third school that I know of to release essays this year...but the first that I will actually apply to :)
When they give page limits for essay responses, I assume that means double spaced?

Haha whoops, my bad (been a while since SC too ;)). That sure doesn't seem like a lot for the essays (approx 500 words maybe?).

0 for 2 soni, read the same post again the end of the first paragraph...I got around 900-950 per essay for 1-3 and around 350-400 for the #4 essays (we had 3 paragraphs), so you should be able to get 225-250ish.

Why do I bother posting these things if you guys dont read them...

Interesting questions for this year.

Anyway, to help out the current applicants, here's what I did:

I used 1.8 spacing, 1" top, 0.7" bottom, 0.5" left/right margins, Arial 10pt font, with some character font condensing (0.3) to fit about 1050 words on 2 pages (for Essays 1-3) and 500 words per optional essay for essay #4.

I chose "I wish the Adcom had asked me" and "Outside of Work I..."

My Essay topics were in the header, within the 1" top margin, so it didn't take up any valuable "real estate" on the page.

Hope that helps!

Haas also released their essays, see other thread... :)

4C is an interesting addition...there was room to cover the same ground last year, but this is a very different focus.

Is the "I wish the Admissions Committee had asked me..." the optional essay? Or is there another optional essay section?

sonibubu,

If you get into a b-school and ask these types of questions, your peers are going to laugh at you. You have to ACTUALLY READ the posts if you expect to get the information out of them

#4A, 4B, 4C, and 4D are optional. You have to choose 2 of the 4 essays in #4.

Go back and read the first 5 posts 10 times and then see if you have any other questions.

No dude. You misinterpreted my question. Most schools offer an OPTIONAL ESSAY to explain anything that isn't covered in other essays. I meant things like why I didn't get a rec from current boss, UG grades, low GMAT quant, etc.

Even accepted.com's blog isn't sure of the answer here and said applicants should contact Kellogg regarding this. I figured since there are some K people here, maybe they can answer.

Let's hold back the laughter for now. ;)

Kellogg has allowed optional essays in addition to the required ones in the past...I assume that they will accept them again this year.

a :) would be useful to tell the tone here, but I'll assume it's friendly banter. :P

Anyway, Essay 4 is required, but only 2 of the 4 are required, like everyone else said.

I don't know whether Kellogg has another "optional" essay, but I remember not writing one since Essay 4 allowed me to address the aspects I had addressed in the optional essays for UCLA and Berkeley.

Kellogg does provide what I consider the most thorough set of essay questions. They really do give you the chance to present the most well rounded picture of who you are. Plus they have some of the most generous word limits.

I agree the essays pretty much do cover everything, I just didn't feel that "I'm an avid poker player, love animals, and oh yeah I didn't get a rec from my current supervisor because..." was the right flow or appropriate. A couple of things would be more appropriate in a single paragraph in a separate optional essay.

Fortunately K allows a third optional essay that will be that final paragraph for me :)

They definitely seem to have a pretty thorough set of essay questions!

How close do most people get to using all the words allotted? Say the limit is 1000 words - do you write 990? Is 800 or so an acceptable range?

I have a feeling I'll hit the limit but am still curious....

thanks,
ac.
