There are many benefits to timing your practice, including:
Kellogg: (The student would like to remain anonymous. Hence I am posting the following on the student's behalf)
UPDATE: Added the part about academics
Cost of Attendance: 220K for 2 years + ~15K (on discretionary social life). The social cost depends on your network and what you want to invest in (international trips vs. more laid back Chicago escapades)
Academics: Academics at Kellogg is non-rigorous compared to other schools and it is the choice of the student to design their academic experience. Most of the majors have great courses but my favourites are courses in Entrepreneurship and Management in Organisations because they are highly applicable in real life. Kellogg has also incorporated courses that combine D&I, thought leadership and philosophy which are becoming fast favourites among students. With academics you can really go two ways: if a particular major (stated in the transcript) or pathway (pathways are a collection of courses that do not get stated in the transcript) then you can take courses under those bundles. You can also choose to not major at all and take courses across majors.
Culture: People are generally warm and approachable. The school encourages students to meet people from different cultures and facilitates such connections through sponsored lunches and clubs. However, most social circles are intra-cultural with some offshoots. KWEST, the pre-Kellogg student trip, is a great way to form lasting connections with people. Kellogg is for you if you like socialising (as much as 3-4 social events per week), want to focus on meaningful conversations with peers in mostly non-competitive settings and believe in teamwork (being/wanting to be comfortable in working with teams - sometimes formed by the school). The culture can be summarised as formal+friendly which essentially means that one has the flexibility to define how formal or friendly they want their relationships to be. There is a great environment to speak up about social and individual issues which are readily addressed by the student bodies
Location Advantage: Kellogg has a great presence in the Chicagoland and Bay areas as well as the south. The Northeast (NYC metro) is however dominated by other schools. We have a steady influx of recruiters from big firms as well as startups. The school just helps students network through programs such as the Quarter in SF, and Global programs (where you visit different countries either via an exchange that is quarter-long or via 2-week visits)
Recruiting: Consulting and Tech are two big industries students recruit in. For internationals, these 2 and IB consist of the majority of firms that sponsor H1B. However, increasingly people are getting interested in Social Impact, Healthcare, Strategy/General Management roles and finding jobs there. There is a lot of traction in the government sector as well. Overall, the Kellogg brand is very strong in the US and has decent recognition worldwide which makes it easy to network and get recruiters' attention.
Financing: Kellogg offers a host of scholarships and loans. Scholarships are usually considered based on the admissions application unless stated otherwise. For international students, there is a Northwestern University Loan program that offers the best rates (almost half the prevailing market rates), plus they have tie-ups with private lenders. The loan mostly covers 100% cost of attendance (as stated in the i20)
Why should you choose Kellogg: If you want a relatively non-rigorous academic experience, wish to make it big in consulting/healthcare/tech, love being around people all the time
Why you should not choose Kellogg: no appetite for 6-month long winters, prefer building your brand individually vs. in a team, are unwilling to pay for a social life
