Laos has a land area
about the same as Great Britain but only four million in population, where many are members of hill tribes ensconced in the virtually inaccessible mountain valleys of the north.
(A) about the same as Great Britain but only four million in population, where many
(B) of about the same size as Great Britain is, but in Laos there is a population of only four million, and many
(C) that is about the same size as Great Britain's land area, but in Laos with a population of only four million people, many of them
(D) comparable to the size of Great Britain, but only four million in population, and many
(E) comparable to that of Great Britain but a population of only four million people, many of whom
Correct answer is E. I chose D, and I don't quite understand why E is better than D.
The explanation offered says "the coordinating conjunction and gives undue emphasis to the claim that many of the people in Laos live in inaccessible places." Isn't this a fact in all answers?
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

A-Land area is not equal to Great Britain
B- we don’t say area of size, we say dimensions of area or measurements of area
C- area that is same size as GB’S, highly redundant.
D- but after comma needs a clause; however there are cases when ‘but’ act as although and doesn’t needs a clause
For example- Sachin has scored more than 20 K runs, an achievement that many other batsmen attempt to make, but without success.
E- Laos has land area comparable to that of GB but (has a) population of only 4 million- since but without comma doesn’t need a clause. It is fine. We can even elide the verb here.
