I choose B initially since it compared with any other state in the United States. Not sure where's my reasoning gone wrong? Could anyone expain please? Thanks
Hi Kimberly77,

The question is, "If the statements above are true, which of the following CANNOT be true?"
So, if you can prove that the situation described in the option choices CAN be true, then that answer choice can not be correct.

We have two pieces of information provided in the stimulus-
1. In the last four years, Sudeki's bike shop has sold more TrackMaker bicycles than did any other single-location store in the state of Oregon. -> No other single location sold more TrackMaker bicycles than Sudeki.
2. Sudeki's Bike Shop ranked third in the United States last year among single-location stores in terms of the number of TrackMaker bicycles sold, a rank it had never before attained.

Now, let's look at (B),
Quote:
(B) More TrackMaker bicycles were sold in the state of Oregon than in any other state in the United States.
Let's assume that a total of 100 bicycles were sold in Oregon at single-store locations. Out of these 100, Sudeki sold about 90 bicycles, the highest by any other single store location. This satisfies (1) above.
But, does this say anything about the bicycles sold at non-single location stores? Or even at the single location stores in other states? Ohio could have sold 1000 TrackMaker bicycles in non-single store locations, such as Target or Walmart. And this does not refute the information provided in the stimulus. So, there definitely CAN be other states where more TrackMaker bicycles were sold than were sold in the state of Oregon.

Makes sense?

Thanks PyjamaScientist for the detailed explanation. However B states more TM bicycles (not less) were sold in Oregon than any other states in US. Your explantion mean there are other stores can sold more than Oregon which can be. Therefore I'm not sure I understand the logic and what did I miss?

Could you kinldy explain why Option E is right? Thanks a bunch.

Hi Kimberly77,

Apologies, I think I should have done a better job at explaining the point. I have edited and elaborated on my initial response. Kindly, give it a go and see if it helps. I have also added a comment on why (E) is correct in my original response above.

Hope it helps.

But, at the same time, it is also possible that the state of Oregon sold the highest number of TrackMaker bicycles than any other state did. This is how it could be possible: Say, Oregon sold 1000 bikes, and Sudeki alone sold 500 of these, and Sudeki was the top seller of TM bikes in the state of Oregon (This satisfies condition 1). But, say, in California and Idaho, two other single-location stores sold 600 and 700 bikes each. But, the total number of bikes in those individual states did not exceed 1000 (This satisfies condition 2). Thus, (B) CAN be true. And we need an answer choice that CAN NOT be true per the given information.

However, if you look at (E),
Quote:
(E) The single-location store that was ranked second in the United States last year in terms of the number of TrackMaker bicycles sold was also located in the state of Oregon.
If the second rank single-location store was also located in the state of Oregon, then the first condition, i.e., Sudeki's bike shop has sold more TrackMaker bicycles than did any other single-location store in the state of Oregon, get violated. Thus, (E) CAN NOT be true per the information provided in the stimulus. And thus is the correct choice.

Brilliant and thanks PyjamaScientist for great expalantion. A very tricky question indeed since it compared non/single location store, most and second ranked...etc B make sense now.
Last question with E, since Sudeki's bike shop has sold the most TrackMaker bicycles in state of Oregon, therfore why is store that was ranked second in TM biks in Oregon not possible? Not sure what did I miss? Thank you so much for your time and insights in advanced.

Hi Kimberly77,

Let me quote myself,

If (E) were true, then the Sudeki would no longer be the numero uno seller of the state of Oregon, and this would violate point (1) above. Because, then Sudeki will become the second-ranked seller in the state of Oregon, not #1.

Hope it helps.

Thanks PyjamaScientist. I see your points.
My reasoning is since No other single location sold more TrackMaker bicycles than Sudeki therefore Sudeki ranked No 1 and others can rank second ? Not sure where is my reasoning wrong?

Sudeki sold most bikes in the state of Oregon, not in the entire United States. So, there are two #2 ranked and #1 ranked sellers. And if #2 ranked seller comes to Oregon (something that option E says) then that would make Sudeki #2 in the state of Oregon.

Great thanks PyjamaScientist. To clarify my understanding is correct...Since Sudeki ranked 1st in Oregon and ranked 3rd in US. Therefore the shop that ranked 2nd in US is impossible to be located in Oregon too?

You are correct. This is exactly why (E) is correct.
