I choose B initially since it compared with any other state in the United States. Not sure where's my reasoning gone wrong? Could anyone expain please? Thanks
Hi
Kimberly77,
The question is, "If the statements above are true, which of the following
CANNOT be true?"
So, if you can prove that the situation described in the option choices CAN be true, then that answer choice can not be correct.
We have two pieces of information provided in the stimulus-
1. In the last four years, Sudeki's bike shop has sold more TrackMaker bicycles than did any other single-location store in the state of Oregon. -> No other single location sold more TrackMaker bicycles than Sudeki.
2. Sudeki's Bike Shop ranked third in the United States last year among single-location stores in terms of the number of TrackMaker bicycles sold, a rank it had never before attained.
Now, let's look at (B),
Quote:
(B) More TrackMaker bicycles were sold in the state of Oregon than in any other state in the United States.
Let's assume that a total of 100 bicycles were sold in Oregon at single-store locations. Out of these 100, Sudeki sold about 90 bicycles, the highest by any other single store location. This satisfies (1) above.
But, does this say anything about the bicycles sold at non-single location stores? Or even at the single location stores in other states?
Ohio could have sold 1000 TrackMaker bicycles in non-single store locations, such as Target or Walmart. And this does not refute the information provided in the stimulus. So, there definitely can be other states where more TrackMaker bicycles were sold than were sold in the state of Oregon.
But, at the same time, it is also possible that the state of Oregon sold the highest number of TrackMaker bicycles than any other state did. This is how it could be possible: Say, Oregon sold 1000 bikes, and Sudeki alone sold 500 of these, and Sudeki was the top seller of TM bikes in the state of Oregon (This satisfies condition 1). But, say, in California and Idaho, two other single-location stores sold 600 and 700 bikes each. But, the total number of bikes in those individual states did not exceed 1000 (This satisfies condition 2). Thus, (B)
CAN be true. And we need an answer choice that CAN NOT be true per the given information.
However, if you look at (E),
Quote:
(E) The single-location store that was ranked second in the United States last year in terms of the number of TrackMaker bicycles sold was also located in the state of Oregon.
If the second rank single-location store was also located in the state of Oregon, then the first condition, i.e.,
Sudeki's bike shop has sold more TrackMaker bicycles than did any other single-location store in the state of Oregon, get violated. Thus, (E) CAN NOT be true per the information provided in the stimulus. And thus is the correct choice.
