i do'nt see any point in C,as c say only some elemets were named........whereas argument says that he named all elemts he discovered.......... his fame grew becasue of acceptence of his work,,,,,,so i guess E is best answer
E is wrong because he is famous not only because he named the elements he discovered, but also because he had discovered these elements.
C is correct because even if he had named all the elements he discovered, it is still correct to say that he had named some of the elements he discovered. If A is true for the entire set, A is always true for its subset.
Example:
All students in this class are girls.
Correct to infer: Some student in this class are girls.
Some students in this class are girls.
NOT correct to infer: All students in the class are girls.
A) Lavoisier strived for fame and influence in teh 18th century.
- can't be inferred from passage
B) All elements found in teh 18th century were given names after Lavoisier.
- He discovered and isolated many chemical elements, not all.
C) Some of the elements that Lavoisier isolated were given names that described their properties.
- I'll go for this. Although the passage suggests he named all the chemicals he discovered, this is the best of the 5 answers.
D) Lavoisier was the most influential and famous scientist of his time.
- He was influential than most of his contempories, not the most influential.
E) Lavoisier became famous only because the names that he gave the chemicals became accepted.
- No. It was accepted later on, but he was already famous back then.
C it is.
