Some recommenders tend to try to make their life simple by forwarding the link to the candidate for a variety of reasons. Ask them not to. That's it.

Hello!
I’m currently in process of gathering LORs for round 1. For some context I started a new job in January 2024 (6 months ago) and my current company is not the biggest MBA proponent- big on growth within company culture. And my direct manager from preliminary conversations also doesn’t seem to be a huge fan of people leaving/isn't the best writer.

As such, my main recommender is someone from my old company (big 4) who I know will give me a glowing LOR.

My question now is, for the schools that require a second letter, do I try to get a manager on my team to write me a LOR (not direct supervisor but will keep it discreet/give good rec) or do I go with a second past manager from the same company as my other recommender who I know will also give me rave reviews?

I’m leaning two recommenders from my old company, but wanted general thoughts/guidance.

Hi jhri188,

Your LORs should preferably come from your direct line managers in your current workspace. Having considered your situation for the 2nd LOR- you can try to get it from a senior colleague who has worked with you and can write in your favor.

Our MBA experts have helped several clients with a situation similar to yours. Do consult with the team once as it will help you make sound decisions for R1 intake.

You can schedule a complimentary call with the team here.

Hello jhri188,

Thanks for writing in.

We understand your situation and while the ideal case scenario would have been to have at least one recommendation from your current workplace, we do not want to risk getting something that lacks personalized examples and richness of content.

Thus, for the second recommender, if you are certain that a senior from your current work place can provide a rich recommendation, please go ahead with him or her; if not, you may go ahead with a previous manager from your previous workplace.

All the best!

Congrats on the new job.

If you feel you would have created a significant impact at your new company, and especially if this will allow you to add a dimension to your profile not visible in the work you did at the earlier firm (say leadership or consulting or client focus - anything that is very different from the nature of work you did earlier, and as a result, allowed you to demonstrate a different set of strengths), then it makes sense to get the second letter from the other manager (the discreet one).

If this isn't the case, then you may just get it from another person from your previous company.

Feel free to reach out if you want to chat more: https://bit.ly/GM_AugAcd_Profile_Evaluation

Best,
Karthik
