[quote="prasannar"]Like many self-taught artists, Perle Hessing did not begin to paint until she was well into middle age.

(A) Like->I got this

correct

(B) As have-> would this be correct if it were just "As"

clearly incorrect

(C) Just as with->why is this wrong?

with doesn't make sense in this case. what's the meaning of "with ... artists, hessing did not begin"?

(D) Just like->why is this wrong?

it is not wrong I believe, but "just" is useless. like by itself is enough

(E) As did->would this be correct if the statement was something like ....,Perle Hessing started to paint in her thirties

don't know

A. only like makes proper comparision beteen nouns.

This question test "Like" v/s "As".

The elimination of B=>
(B) As have-> would this be correct if it were just "As"

for me is incorrect.

Like compares nouns , As uses clause for the same.
So both the following will be correct =>
Like many self-taught artists, Perle Hessing did not begin to paint until she was well into middle age.
As not done by self-taught artists, Perle Hessing did not begin to paint until she was well into middle age.

In the options, we do not have any option that suites "As" ... as mentioned above.

Like is used to compare nouns and as is used to compare verbs. Using this we can eliminate B,C and E.

Between like and just like, the latter is too verbose. Hence the answer is A

adkikani Nice question. Looking forward to an expert reply. Also Can it be that absence of "Just" makes option A concise therefore better than D. I agree its that a cheap short on explanation, However, the meaning change is more vital here.

(E) is incorrect since we can't compare a noun (Perle Hessing) vs action (did)
