The idiom used here is "Like X, Y" Both X and Y have to be comparable to each other.
The non-underlined portion has "wealthy investors" at the beginning of the clause, so we need to have a noun in parallel to wealthy investors.

Option (C) provides the correct comparison between "investors" and "wealthy investors".

Like the care taken by investors to protect their assets through insurance policies and tax planning, many wealthy individuals choose to place their assets in offshore trust funds.


A. Like the care taken by investors to protect their assets through insurance policies and tax planning

Incorrect.

This answer choice is illogical. The comparative construction (indicated by the use of like) illogically compares the care taken to protect their assets (an abstract noun) and many wealthy individuals (humans).

What helps us identify this question as a Comparative question as well as identify the mistake is the following Stop Sign:

    Like, unlike, than, as

When you come across any of the above words, make sure that the things under comparison are logically and grammatically parallel.


B. As the care by investors to protect their assets through insurance policies and tax planning

Incorrect.

This answer choice is grammatically incorrect. A comparative section beginning with as should always include a conjugated verb but the comparative section here (as the care by investors to protect their assets) does not.


C. Like investors who take care to protect their assets through insurance policies and tax planning

This answer choice corrects the illogical comparison in the original question by changing the thing compared from the care (an abstract noun) to investors (humans), to create a logical parallel with wealthy individuals (humans).

In addition it makes correct use of the Like Comparative. Like sections should not include a conjugated verb. While there is a verb in the like section (take care), it is part of a relative clause (starting with who). If we're not careful, we can eliminate a correct answer because of this.

Example: Like the singer that sang the song, the guitarist gave a good performance.

This may look like a mistake but it isn't, because the conjugated verb sang is in the Relative Clause that describes the singer. The same principle could also apply to this question:

Like a chess player who is playing an important match, a good business executive should always be thinking several moves ahead.


D. As investors' taking care to protect their assets with insurance policies and tax planning

Incorrect.

This answer choice is grammatically incorrect. A comparative section beginning with as should always include a conjugated verb but the comparative section here (as investors' taking care to protect their assets) does not. The construction taking care to protect is built of unconjugated verbs which here function as a noun.


E. Like insurance policies and tax planning for asset protection

Incorrect.

This answer choice is illogical. The comparative construction (indicated by the use of the like) illogically compares insurance policies and tax planning (solutions to a problem) and many wealthy individuals (humans).
