yunbao the seems to be a disconnect in option "D". For it to be correct it should have been

Option C makes that connection.

Like the training of stained glass workers, whose apprenticeships take years to complete, other artisans learning to perfect their craft must make a major commitment of their time.

A Like the training of stained glass workers, whose apprenticeships take years to complete (training compared with other artisans, incorrect)
B While the training of stained glass workers, an apprenticeship that takes years of preparation (same as in A, incorrect)
C Like stained glass workers, whose apprenticeships take years to complete (Correctly compares glass workers with other artisans)
D Similar to stained glass workers, preparing for years in an apprenticeship (Incorrect, Like is used to show comparison between nouns, here glass workers and artisans are both nouns)
E Like that of stained glass workers, whose apprenticeship takes years (that refers to what?, ambiguity, better to strike it out)

Like X, Y is correct usage hence answer has to be (C)...

Like stained glass workers, whose apprenticeships take years to complete, other artisans learning to perfect their craft must make a major commitment of their time.
