Options A, B and E can be easily eliminated.

'Due To' is incorrectly modifying 'was caused' in option C.

So D is the correct answer.

A) technology made rapid progress in the second half of the twentieth century as a result of increased funding for both organizational as well as

Incorrect: The sentence presents an illogical comparison between “the unprecedented growth…” and “technology”. “The unprecedented growth…” must be compared with “rapid progress”. This sentence uses the incorrect idiom “both X as well as Y”. The correct idiom is “both X and Y”.

B) that technology made rapid progress in the second half of the twentieth century was due to the increase in funding for organizational and

Incorrect: This choice also has a comparison error. The comparison is now between the noun entity “the unprecedented growth…” and the clause “that technology…”. Use of “due to” is not correct here because it has been used to present the reason for the action “made rapid progress”. Here, “because of” must be used to correctly present the reason for an action.

C) the rapid technological progress in the second half of the twentieth century was caused due to increased funding for both organizational as well as

Incorrect: “Caused” is redundant in the presence of “due to”. This choice also repeats the incorrect idiom “both X as well as Y” seen in choice A.

D) the rapid progress of technology in the second half of the twentieth century was a result of increased funding for organizational as well as

Correct: This indeed is the correct answer choice. The choice presents a logical comparison between the noun entities “the unprecedented growth of the manufacturing industry” and “the rapid progress of technology”. It also gets rid of the idiom error of Choice A by removing “both”.

E) technology made rapid progress in the second half of the twentieth century because there was an increase in funding for both organizational and

Incorrect: This choice repeats the illogical comparison error of Choice A.
