Scientists can't be based on something. Such as is used for specific examples... Scientists derived on the Basis of some related exmples but not based on the examples itself...

Scientists are not based on growth rates. So, A, C and E are out. Further, in E, "such growth rates as those of" is awkward. In C, usage of "like" is wrong. "such as" is required to give examples, not "like".

In D, usage of "like those of" is used to show similarity between "growth rates of large modern reptiles" and "growth rates of Galapagos tortoise". This implies Galapagos tortoise are not reptiles but other animals and their growth rates are similar to large modern reptiles. This is distorting the meaning of the sentence.

Right, as everyone has already stated: B. Scientists cannot be "based on" something. And we must use "such as" for examples.

i prefer the choice A
for 2 reasons

i) usage of proper idiom based on ( I remember reading it in manhattan SC)
ii) and to introduce examples we should use such as...

CDE are out for using like. Like should be used for comparison of noun. Such as is used in A and B for giving an example. On the basis of some info scientist can cnclude something. Based on is not good idiom here. So B is the answer here.

(A) Based on the growth rates of large modern reptiles such as
Not correct as 'Based on the growth rates of large.... ' is not parallel to 'examinations of fossils of juvenile....' Hence incorrect

(B) On the basis of growth rates of large modern reptiles such as
Correct.... 'On the basis of growth rates of large.... ' parallel to 'examinations of fossils of juvenile....' clause....

(C) Based on the growth rates of large modern reptiles like
Like is incorrect

(D) On the basis of growth rates of large modern reptiles, like those of
Like is incorrect

(E) Based on such growth rates as those of large modern reptiles like
Like is incorrect

IMO - A

A seems to be parallel -

A. Based on the growth rates of..... and examinations of fossils....

Also, scientists based their estimation on the above 2 facts.

Somehow - i think - Scientists does not refer clearly to the 2 factors(growth rate and examination) property in B

On the basis of growth rates of and examinations of fossils....

Can some one confirm the OA ?

cheers

I don't get why A is wrong. Why can't "based on" be used with "scientists". It's not like the scientists are based on something. Is the sentence below incorrect grammar?

Based on the facts, I made my decision.

Same, i picked B.

The reason is that a person noun cannot be "based on" something... the "findings" or "observations" can be "based on" x, not a person "based on" x.

On the basis of x, person <scientist> y
Based on x, <findings>, <observations>, <data> y
