We need past perfect tense. I think other choices misplace "in young manhood" as well.

My vote for E, close one was B, but I felt that had learned is more proper than has learned.

I agree. A, B & C are out as they use discovering. Lincoln already discovered X long back.

So D & E remain. The answer choice D uses semi colon making D incorrect.

E seemed best of the lot and I googled to find the answer to be D. How ever the correct answer choice in that page has a semi colon and even then I dont see how D makes sense.
