Solution

Step 1: Analyse Question Stem

    • Line M travels through 3 quadrants.
Does line M travel through quadrant IV?
    • There are 4 ways in which line M can pass through quadrant IV
      o Case 1: x-intercept positive, y-intercept positive
      o Case 2: x-intercept positive, y-intercept negative

      o Case 3: x-intercept positive, y-intercept negative.
      o Case 4:x-intercept negative, y-intercept negative

 Note, that if y-intercept is negative, then we can sure that the line passes through the 4th quadrant.

Step 2: Analyse Statements Independently (And eliminate options) – AD/BCE

Statement 1: Line M has a negative x-intercept
    • M can pass through
o Either quadrants III, II, and I.
o Or quadrants II, III, and IV
    • We can’t say for sure that M will pass through quadrant IV or not.
Hence, statement 1 is not sufficient, we can eliminate answer options A and D.
Statement 2: Line M has a negative y-intercept.
    • In this case line will pass through quadrant IV.
Hence, statement 2 is sufficient, the correct answer is Option B.

Line M travels through three quadrants of the coordinate plane. Does Line M travel through Quadrant IV?

(Statement1): Line M has a negative x-intercept
(For example: y = x+2 or y = -x+2 )

It depends on the slope of the Line M:
--> If the slope of the line M is a positive (y= x+2), then Line M does not travel through Quadrant IV. (NO)
--> If the slope of the line M is a negative (y= -x-2), then Line M travels through Quadrant IV. (YES)
Insufficient

(Statement2): Line M has a negative y-intercept
(For example: y = x-2 or y = -x-2)

It depends on the slope of the Line M:
--> If the slope of the line M is a positive (y= x-2), then Line M travels through Quadrant IV. (YES)
--> If the slope of the line M is a negative (y= -x-2), then Line M travels through Quadrant IV. (YES)
Sufficient

Answer (B).
