I'm a software product manager planning to start my MBA at Kellogg this fall. I would be happy to share information on my role and potential career paths. I work for a major global hardware and software producer and drive a line of products targeted at the enterprise market. A few of the roles your may be interested in are:
Product Manager: Usually technical knowledge required, this role is going to be responsible for one or more products. A lot of the work is centered around translating usage models and requirements, and creating product scope documents outlining the features and implementation plans. Engineering/development would use with these usage models and requirements to develop high-level designs and product architectures.
Project Manager: This is less technical, and would be focused on managing the phases of one or more projects from requirements gathering to release/delivery. Mostly focused on scheduling, resource management, progress tracking, etc...
Strategic Planner: Lots of research and customer interaction, responsible for providing product management with the information they need on markets, trends, data from analysts, as well as working with other products and company roadmaps to make sure there is sufficient data to ensure long-term product growth.
Happy to answer questions or chat if I can provide helpful information.
