Hi
cmaldona13,
Sorry to hear about your rejections and waitlists. Low GPAs can be tricky. Often,
Personal MBA Coach advises candidates to remain brief and to the point when explaining the cause of a low GPA in an optional essay. Do not offer long-winded excuses or any more information than is needed.
Taking additional coursework (particularly quant courses or those related to your future field) can be a great way to boost your profile. Keeping that in mind, think about your post-MBA goals and what type of course would best complement these aspirations, since it is important that all components of your application fit together to tell a consistent story.
You may also need to cast a wider net. Our clients apply, on average, to 5 to 8 schools, including reach schools and some safer options.
We regularly work with applicants who have a low GPA and they get in if they ace the GMAT, have impressive experience, and put together compelling applications. In your case, the missing piece of the puzzle may your application strategy as a whole.

Hi All,
I am an applicant with a LOW GPA, sub 3.0. I feel like it is THE thing holding me back. Would taking classes over the summer help my case? Would they be worth it? I have a 750 GMAT, 8 Years of Work Experience with demonstrated career growth and leadership opportunities. I have a bachelors in mechanical engineering and I currently lead an engineering team at one of the largest aerospace companies in the world. I know this was a tough round, but 2 almost automatic rejections and 2 waitlists have me wondering on how I can improve my application for R1 next year.
Since I come from an engineering background and still work in engineering, along with a pretty good GMAT score, would taking classes be of added benefit? I really don't have a compelling reason for my low GPA other than "I was immature and have grown since then." I have already taken a few classes to benefit my career along the way (SQL, Project Management), but would it be beneficial to take a Stats or accounting class? I would love some perspective on what types of classes would be beneficial at demonstrating my ability to succeed in B-School. Is taking multiple at the same time better? Quant focused?
Thanks,
Christian
