Official Solution:
The figure above represents a rectangular garden with a walkway around it. The garden is 12 feet long and 10 feet wide. The walkway is uniformly 4 feet wide, and its edges meet at right angles. The area of the walkway is what percent of the area of the garden?
A. 2%
B. 10%
C. 20%
D. 100%
E. 200%
The total length of the walkway is \(12 + 4 + 4 = 20\) feet, and the total width of the walkway is \(10 + 4 + 4 = 18\) feet. Thus, the total area of the
garden plus walkway is \(20 * 18 = 360\) square feet.
The area of the walkaway alone is (total) - (garden) = 360 - 120 = 240 square feet.
Therefore, the area of the walkway (240 square feet) is 200% of the area of the garden (120 square feet).
