Maesanin, the active ingredient in an herbal tea used by East Africans to ward off cholera, has an antibacterial action but by a mechanism that is neither understood nor similar to that of other antibiotics.

A) has an antibacterial action but by a mechanism that is neither understood nor similar to that of - What is “but by a mechanism” really being compared to? It doesn’t make sense if compared to the actual antibacterial action

B) has an antibacterial action by a mechanism that is not understood, however, nor similar to - Wordy and incorrect meaning is inferred

C) has an antibacterial action, but it does so by a mechanism that is neither understood nor similar to that of - it does what?

D) acts against bacteria by a mechanism that is not understood, however, and is different from - incorrect use of however

E) acts against bacteria, but it does so by a mechanism that is not understood and is different from that of - best of the worst!

Option A: 'but' signifies contrast when use of contrast is incorrect - eliminate A
Option B: broken fragment towards the tail of the sentence - lacks verb. eliminate B
Option C: 'it does so'.... it doesn't convey exactly what the chemical is doing and is thus confusing - eliminate C
Option D: 'and is different....' incorrectly refers to the the drug and not the mechanism (we are comparing the mechanism of this drug and that of other drugs - so incorrect) - eliminate D
Option E: best choice remaining.

Experts, please correct me if I am wrong! Hope my reasoning is correct :D
