Hi All,
I recently took the GMAT and would love to hear any advice on how to get my score above 750.
While I was tracking around 750 in my official GMAC practice tests (generally around 49Q, 44V), I ended up getting a 710 (47Q, 42V) on my exam last weekend. Specifically, I've found that I struggle with timing on the quant section and sentence correction on the verbal section. In terms of preparation, I am a current college senior and studied intensely for about 2.5 weeks over winter break (3-4 hours per day) using the
MGMAT guides and practice problems from the official quant and official verbal guides. This time around, I'm hoping that consistent studying over a 1-2 month period will help me reach my target score (ideally 750+). Are there any specific resources or prep courses you'd recommend for my particular weaknesses? Any feedback/guidance is greatly appreciated.
Thank you for all of your help.
Best,
hoya21
Hi hoya21,
First of all, congratulations on a great score. But as you feel you are capable of scoring better, you can definitely try for it. And it's good that you know your weak areas as it will make the process much easier. Let me help you here.
Identifying the issue:
Struggling with timing is only a symptom. The actual problem is not using the right methodology to solve the questions. A question can be solved in 'N' number of ways. But to solve it under optimum time, you have to use the best possible method to solve the question. If you are facing time crunch for the last few questions on quant, it means that you are spending more than optimum time for a few questions in the initial quarters. This has to be taken care of.
Coming to sentence correction, you have to narrow the exact step in which you are struggling. To be precise, solving SC questions involves multiple steps such as:
- Understanding the intended meaning of the original sentence
- Identifying the errors if any
- Eliminating answer choices which either are grammatically incorrect or do not convey the intended meaning
You might have often come across answer choices which are grammatically correct and convey a logical meaning but are indeed incorrect. So, it's important that you approach the SC questions from meaning stand-point and eliminate answer choices which are grammatically incorrect or which do not convey the intended meaning of the original sentence.
The path ahead:
As you have scored a 710, it means that you are doing most of the things right. It's just that you have to tweak your approach a little and do to that it's important that you narrow down your weak areas to the point and work on them. As discussed earlier, it's important to understand at which step you are struggling with SC.
If you have an ESR, I can help you in analyzing it. If not, we can get in touch over a call and have a detailed discussion about your study strategy till now, your weak areas and the way you approach questions. This will help me analyze your way of approaching questions, identify the flaw if any and suggest you the plan of action. And regarding the resource, you can check out
GMATWhiz online course. It is a personalized course which helps you to work on your weak areas by analyzing your performance after every topic and by providing you with additional improvement modules if your accuracy is not satisfactory in that topic.
We actually have a Scholarship program, which provide to students who have already scored 700 or above and are looking to improve further. So, we can discuss about that as well over the call. You can use the below link to get in touch with me.
