Many people believe that such activities as owning a pet, taking care of another's pet, and, of course, babysitting an infant not only confer the capacity of friendship on a child but also develop role-taking skills, since that child must put him- or herself in the pet or infant's situation and imagine how that pet or infant feels.

A. not only confer the capacity of friendship on a child but also develop

B. confer the capacity of friendship on a child but also are developing

C. are conferring the capacity of friendship on a child but also are developing

D. not only confer the capacity of friendship on a child, they are also developing

E. are conferring the capacity of friendship on a child, and they are also developing

Official Explanation

Creating a filter: the original sentence passes the subject-verb test and has no problematic pronouns. The preposition "on" is correct with the verb "confer"; "confer on" is proper English usage to describe the act of bestowing something, particularly acquired characteristics. We review the answer choices looking for objective defects.

Finding objective defects: choice (B) has a lack of parallelism between "confer" and "developing." That eliminates (B) and (D). Choice (C) uses an ongoing present tense unnecessarily and against the intended sense of the sentence, which describes a generality. Choice (E) has the same problem.

The correct answer is (A).
