Mate is a beverage found in much of South America. While it is uncertain where mate was first made, there are more varieties of it found in Paraguay than anywhere else. Also, mate is used more widely there than anywhere else. Therefore, Paraguay is likely the place where mate originated.

Which one of the following, if true, would most strengthen the argument?

(A) It is rare for there to be a great variety of types of a beverage in a place where the beverage has not been in use for a very long time
.
(B) Many Paraguayans believe that mate became popular at a time when people from other areas of South America were first migrating to Paraguay.

(C) Many Paraguayans believe that the best mate is found in Paraguay.

(D) There are few places outside of South America where mate is regularly consumed.

(E) Typically, the longer a beverage has been in use in a particular place, the more widely that beverage is used there.

Hit kudos

We need to find an argument that support an idea that mate has originated in Paraguay.
A.Just says that mate has been in use for a long time. Nothing about originations
B. Says about peak of fame, not about country of origin.
C.Irrelevant. Best mate doesn't mean "original"
D. Regularly consumed? Doesn't mean that this country is not a country of origin
E.Correct. Says that probably mate has been consumed for a long time and Paraguay can be a country of origin

Ain't both A and E communicating almost the same thing? A takes into account the variety while B takes into account the wide consumption.
Both the factors are premises to the statement. What am I misinterpreting?

Hi Bulleride!

I hope that I understood you correctly. A is talking about types of beverages. So A just says mate has been in use for a long time but doesn't help to explain country of origin. If you read last two sentences you see that author makes a conclusion and this conclusion is based on premise that mate is used widely than anywhere else. E strenghthens this premises saying that the longer mate has been in use the more widely that beverage is used. So between A and E latter is better. Hope it is clear

Firstly, A and E are kinda close. So had E not been there A would have been our answer. Now coming to A vs E, look at the tone of A. Its kind of negative. Second, the usage of the word rare means that there have been beverages that have developed varieties even though they havent been in use for a long time. So is mate a rarity? maybe.
Option E is more clear and direct.

Actually, The conclusion is based on both premise:

1. There are more varieties of it found in Paraguay than anywhere else.
2. Also, mate is used more widely there than anywhere else.

IMO, A is a bit extreme because the author said that more varieties of mate was found in Paraguay and mate is used more widely, leading to the origin of mate;however, (A) said "a great variety of types of a beverage". "Great varieties" is not necessary for the conclusion to hold true.

The statement that would most strengthen the argument is:

(E) Typically, the longer a beverage has been in use in a particular place, the more widely that beverage is used there.

This statement reinforces the idea that if mate was first made in Paraguay (as the argument suggests), and there are more varieties of it found there than anywhere else, along with wider usage, it aligns with the pattern that typically happens when a beverage has been in use in a particular place for a longer time. The correlation between the length of time a beverage has been in use and its widespread usage supports the argument that Paraguay is likely the place where mate originated.
