Hi experts,
I took the GMAT officially eight times, maxing out on the number of attempts. I got my score to a 690 (Q48 / V36). However, I also took the EA and received a score of 162. (Also the GRE 2x 3-4 years ago and did not do well - barely broke 310)
I'm applying to a few schools (e.g., Booth) that do not take the EA for the full-time program, and I'm writing an optional essay to call out my below average GMAT. Should I mention I took the EA and got a 162 in the optional essay for these programs? I think comparatively my 162 is stronger than my 690, but I know these schools do not accept the EA for the full-time program.

Hi. Sorry to hear about your journey. I think a 690 is solid, just below the 700 barrier.
At the same time, all applicants are more than just their scores and it’s the story that matters. If you they don’t have anything else to address in the optional essay, I would absolutely use it.
You can address your conundrum and mentioned that EA 162 is equivalent of a certain person tile which then is equivalent of a certain GMAT score. It’s a stretch but it gives an additional data point and demonstrates that you are committed as well as potentially informs them about the fact that she would be applying to some other programs that do accept EA with a stronger score. (We have a personal tile chart somewhere for EA, and I can’t remember what 162 is but I think it’s close to 99th percentile?). Unfortunately there is no official GMAC percentile table.

I don't mean to be a downer, but I don't think addressing this issues in the optional essays is going to do you any good. What exactly will be your explanation? If you have nothing else to talk about, I suppose you can address your GMAT/EA situation but recalibrate your expectations.
As bb mentioned, it's just one factor in your application. You took the exam several times and while you did quite well with a 690, there's nothing you can really say that will convince an AdCom that they should look the other way. In fact, one could argue you shouldn't be using written portions of your application to focus on a weakness. You're better off directing your efforts to talking up what I'm sure are really good other parts of your application. You may also want to keep the range of MBA programs on your list broad just in case the GMAT ends up working against you as you're just below that 700 threshold.
