Hi guys,
I have very low gpa from UofT undergrad with cgpa 2.5, and gpa for last year alone is much worse as I just took one course (hardest one) that counts for gpa and rest was credit courses.
When I look back, I admit that I didn't take things serious, had personal health issues and was more involved in student clubs/volunteers.
Currently have about 3-4 years of work experience, and with recent talk with management, I was questioned about when I would be planning to take the MBA program.
Would there be a any chance for me to get into a part time MBA program in Canada if I can ace the gmat? One of my friend have similar gpa and gave up on this, please advise if there is even a point for me to try and take gmat.. or there is no hope for me at all for this.
Also IF there is a chance, is it worth taking MBA at non major schools or better to try CFA and take individual courses and certificates?
Thanks in advance!

Hi sklkfkdkks
- CGPA is not a huge factor for EMBA admissions, as they are more focused on your career goals, work achievements, and fit with the program
- Rotman, Schulich, Ryerson, and DeGroote are some options you can consider. Keep in mind though that their average experience can be a bit higher.
- Don't go for a part-time program at a non-major school. The CFA is not a substitute for the MBA, but can be a supplement.

Hope this helps. Feel free to come back with more queries as needed.

I think you are undervaluing your potential position here. 2.5 is low, kinda borderline but absolutely possible to get into a top MBA program if you nail the GMAT! Having a CFA would be a cherry on top and give you some cred in your applications to offset bad grades - CFA requires work and dedication. FYI, at UT, the CFA is actually acceptable as a proxy for GMAT. But that is Rotman-specific.

The fact that you have experience adversity and hardship, and been active in extracurriculars, both show well-roundedness and you can leverage these things in your application to show depth of character and well-roundedness.

I would recommend you pick your self-esteem up off the ground, take the GMAT and maybe hire a tutor to accelerate the process. Set up a 6 week study plan and get up one hour early every weekday. Quality over quantity.

If you can make a go of it (or for the GRE) you can have a shot at a top MBA. If you are committed to staying in Canada, Ivey application rounds are coming up soon. Shoot for R3 Ivey July 15 and if that doesn't work out; at least you will be ready to submit for round 1 for September intake schools in Canada.

I would also consider taking a class (perhaps something from Berkeley Extension online). Often taking a class (and doing very well) can show that you are able to excel academically (while working full time) - and can somewhat mitigate a low GPA from a few years ago.
