Hello everyone,

I would ask you whether MBA or Msc Finance for Corporate Finance consulting.

My profile:
Undergrad: BBA (non-target uni from Spain)
Age: 26
GPA: 3.4
GMAT: not taken yet, 680-700 expected
Work exp: 5 years in Corporate Finance consulting and also founded a startup.
English: 7,5 IELTS

Track 1: Msc Finance top school (i.e RSM/ESADE/SSE/HEC/LBS)
Track 2 Msc Finance top school but good value for money (i.e RSM/SSE/CBS) + MBA top school (IESE/ESADE/Bocconi/LBS...)
Track 3: (MBA top school) only

Let's say, in terms of money spent: 2>3>1; in terms of usefulness?

Thank you in advance.

Hi xavier8

- You have 5 years of experience already, and have a BBA in your undergrad. Therefore, Track 2 makes little sense, either by way of education, or job prospects, or the expenditure involved. Therefore it comes down to Track 1 and Track 3.
- Now, between options #1 and 3, let's evaluate on both cost and future prospects. Clearly, #1 is the cheaper one, as you note, but it's not just about the cost involved right now. The point is that #3 will give you broader career options. Yes, you may have corp fin consulting as a goal right now, but the objective is not just one role. In all probability, you may even be able to get into such a role without more education too. With an MBA, not only will you be able to explore a wider gamut of options in finance and in consulting, but your later career growth too could receive a boost, as you might be called upon to play more BD/strategy roles (as a Principal/Partner) later.
- Overall, would suggest you go for #3, if the costs are manageable.
- In terms of schools, why not also look at options such as Oxford/Cambridge/IMD/INSEAD?

Hope this helps. Feel free to come back with more queries as needed.

Hello,

Many thanks for your reply. I agree with you and I will go for a MBA. As you mentioned, it will give me a broader job options in the future. Regarding the schools, I have a pool of options. Since I would like to work in Spain, I think IESE/ESADE is the best option. However, I also have in mind Oxford/Cambridge (which is the best?) as well as SDA Bocconi and HEC. LBS and INSEAD would be the best but unless I got a scholarship, I can't afford them.

Thank you in advance,

Best.

Hi xavier8

Cambridge and Oxford are very comparable. Among all the options you have listed, HEC is possibly the best, followed by OxBridge (either). In Spain, IESE would be the best, followed by IE (you missed this one in the list) and then ESADE. Among all the options you have listed, INSEAD is the best, followed by LBS. These are all recommendations for your goals, not meant as criticism of any school. You might find Study in Europe with an HEC student useful as well. HEC Paris MBA Application on the HEC MBA would be useful as well.

On scholarships, would need more details on your profile to make a comment. Broadly, with a 700+ and a strong app, you would be in contention. Apply early (R1) to the programs you target as well.

Hope this helps. Feel free to come back with more queries as needed.

Hello GyanOne,

Thank you very much for your help. If you had to make a choice among ESADE, IESE, HEC and Cambridge, which business school would you choose? (I do not mention IE because I live in Barcelona).

Best,

Hi xavier8

Cambridge possibly (discounting for the Brexit impact), followed by HEC.

Again, this is not to criticize any school or rate them as better or worse, but just to answer given your profile and situation.

Hey xavier8,

You have kind of a mixed profile for both the courses I would say, Let me start first presenting a few points in your profile for MBA:

From the info, you gave me your GPA and IELTS score seem good enough.
Your work Experience as a Corporate finance consulting is again a valuable asset in your application, as you haven't provided the firm name, cannot comment on that but big brands on your CV would act as an add-on to your profile.

Coming to schools now, well 680-700 is a pretty average score, so it limits your chances in the top colleges for MBA such as Harvard, HEC, INSEAD (You will need a 730+ score to get into them).

As for your current profile information available, Msc Finance would be a better fit though If you can share a few more details about your profile, I will be able to help out better.

But if you want to go for the next best schools such as Rotman, Carnegie Mellon, NUS, Mannheim for MBA, a 700 is decent enough and you will have a fair shot.

As for the track you mentioned above I would say Targeting Both MSc in finance and MBA together can be a good option for you with the schools mentioned above.

Just work on your applications and make sure the schools see the value you will bring to them.

Further for a better evaluation of your profile, I would suggest you take the free profile evaluation we offer here by mentioning the missing details such as extracurricular activities, NGO, Social Work, Awards etc so that we can take a closer look at your profile and estimate your chances better.
