Great reply. You really hit the nail on the head.

Totally agree. Moreover, I read your blog (of course my primary interest is to pursue a PhD as well): good job and insights.

I have completed a PhD in Business, but wanted to post here to clarify a common misconception that Maths is very important for a PhD in Business.
If it was a PhD in Maths or Engineering or other sciences involving lots of calculations, then yes it would be important, but for a Business degree, its NOT ALWAYS the case.

If someone is conducting research using Quantitative methods, then yes maths is important as you will be dealing with statistics.
But, on the flip side, if someone is conducting research using qualitative methods (such as interviews, case studies, observation etc.) then Maths is not all that important.

Even when conducting quantitative research, most people would use SPSS software to help with calculations and analysis. So, unless you are coming up with new theoretical model, and cannot use SPSS packages, Maths should not be a major concern to stop someone from pursuing a PhD in Business.

Yeah, the degree of importance of Maths depends on the kind of research you'll be doing. And maybe I'm biased because I'm from a quantitative field. But I still think it's risky to count that you will not need Maths when applying to a PhD in business, at least in the US (I'm from Brazil and there it seems a little different indeed).

I've talked with other students from other concentrations which are not quantitative, and even so they are required to study statistics and learn how to use software like SPSS. And the fact that you're using SPSS to help you doesn't mean you're doing low level maths. A software is a tool, but you may be doing something very complex with it. It's like Photoshop: it's very powerful software which helps you to draw, but if you're bad at drawing Photoshop by itself will not turn you into a professional artist. If he has problems with logic, as he stated, he may have also difficulty to use SPSS.

So, if you want to do a PhD in business without Maths, be sure to check details about the program and potential advisors. At my university, for example, before the PhD begins, there is a bootcamp about maths and statistics we are expected to take. And that's for all new PhD students, not only quantitative ones. So, lots of maths and statistics even before the PhD starts for we all.

Yes, many universities will require you to complete such boot camps or courses to ensure you are familiar with tools and concepts. But, the point I was trying to make is that one does not have to 'dread' that PhD in business will involve lot of maths. It may or may not depending on the type of research. One does not have to be a math expert in majority of cases.
