Top MBA Employers: MBB Recruiting Grew 3x for H1B Candidates Since 2017There is a lot of talk about MBB recruiting and chances from top schools. Some folks claim that 10 people from one school went to MBB and others say that 70 from another but what was the mix of those recruits? Was it the 60/40 split US vs. International or different? By the way, the inside scoop is that the chances of
landing an MBB role are estimated at just 2-3% for any applicant. What about International MBA applicants? What are MBB recruiting chances and what is their share?
I am doing a refresher of the data that I
pulled back in 2020 after the pandemic began so i am going to look at the past 10 years and how good/bad those years were for H1B MBB and consulting applicants. We know from numerous reports that last year, 2022, was particularly generous with recruiting offers from all industries and especially consulting) but let's see how it translated for internationals. To pull this information, I am going to use the Homeland Security's public
database of H1B employers. One aspect to note is that while MBA's are a big share of the MBB recruiting pool, they are not the only ones. There are Master's, PhD, and some undergrad consultants that get recruited, so the number of available slots will be smaller but let's see how many are recruited and let's consider their chances since we can easily guess/estimate the number of international applicants.
Key Takeaways:- Historically MBB's recruited about 250 H1B eligible candidates 2010-2017. Among Top 20 schools that represents 9% of all international students. Based on the sum of Top 20 class sizes and 35% international applicant ratio. This does not mean that only 9% of international students get into MBB since not all students apply to MBB's and not all applicants are MBA students.
- 9% Historic ratio is a lot better than what I would have expected. Again, the referenced statistic of 2-3% getting through in McKinsey is a lot less than 9% of all Top 20 MBA
- Recruiting of international H1B candidates into MBB has grown 3X since 2017
- This means with International student supply staying somewhat constant, chances are also 3 times as good (unless some underlying changes to MBB recruiting more candidates for junior roles vs. MBA's)
- Bain recruited and continues to recruit fewest H1B candidates of all MBB's. In part, due to its size being 1/3 of McKinsey and 1/2 of BCG, but still, it recruits only 1/6 and 1/3, being the most H1B Unfriendly MBB.
- The 2020 decline away from the trend line was likely due to pandemic
- 2022 Flat line is likely due to difficulty in attracting and recruiting candidates and potentially a slow down in 2022
- Spike in denials in 2018 and 2019 was likely the reflection of the Trump's administration's approach to employment and immigration
- Prediction for 2023 is bleak and dark. Likely a decline as MBB's are holding out on recruiting as there is no longer FOMO and economy is in limbo
