I am posting a know concept, but it gets lost when we try lot of tough problem using standard methods.
First I will just touch few concepts of average.
As every one knows Average = \(\frac{sum of all the elements}{no of elements}\).
It has two take-away :- 1) If we have a set in which each element is equal, then the average is the same number. 2) even if we have all the numbers scattered on a number line, the numbers will add up to give an average value. This average value will always be between minimum and maximum numbers in that set.
We would use both of the above understanding to solve a simple problem. Let's try!!
I havn't given the complete question in one line, because we will solve it step by step to understand this.
Example: Average of 5 numbers is 50.
We have two possibility:-
1) All elements can have value of 50. 2) All the elements would be scattered, say few would have value less than 50 and few will have value more than 50.
Let's assume further:- Four numbers to be - 42, 43 , 49 and 52. What is the 5th number?
Process to solve this problem quickly:-
1) Subtract each element from 50 and note the difference. In the above example the difference is 8, 7, 1 and \(-2\).
2) Add all the difference value : 8 + 7 + 1 -2 = 14.
3) The 5th number is 14 more than 50 . It is 64.
Answer is 64.

NOTE :- This method is best for short numbers like this. It will save lot of time in the exam. I solved this problem in less than 15 seconds. You too can do it.
