Hi all,
I am targeting to get into a top B school in EU (Preferably UK) for a post-experience Mfin course
I have a strong finance oriented profile:
- Bsc. Finance (NMIMS, Mumbai) - GPA is low at 3.0/4.0 but good grades in quants, fixed income and portfolio management (which is sort of the domain I want to end up working in)
- 4+ years of workex in Fixed income / Credit research (supporting UK based clients; mid-size investments)
- Passed CFA L1 & FRM L1
- Volunteered in 5-10 PE/VC and other finance events in college
- Social: Worked with a couple of NGO’s for 2-4 months
My target universities are: LBS (had a profile evaluation with them; they encouraged that basic requirements are met and application is recommended), LSE, Cambridge and UCL
Planning to write the GMAT very soon and hoping to get a good score to cover for low GPA
Would love to hear any thoughts on:
- Overall chances for the mentioned colleges or any other comments. Top preference is LBS
- Any other college that should be added to the list?
- Target GMAT score? (I might be eligible for a GMAT waiver at LBS. Should I consider it?)

A: You should be a candidate for these schools at it stands now. As you note, the GMAT is a missing X factor. Also, one thing you'll have to note is why you want this degree. You have lots of work experience and CFA/FRM designation. It might make the degree redundant in their minds. Prove them otherwise in your essays and interview.
- Any other college that should be added to the list?
A: You can add Oxford and Imperial. If you are willing to go outside of the UK, obviously add HEC and INSEAD.
- Target GMAT score? (I might be eligible for a GMAT waiver at LBS. Should I consider it?)
A: You should take the GMAT. Set aside the waiver. You will need it for other programs and maybe even potential scholarship money. The real minimum score for you is a 700. It would be ideal if you could get a 730+. That would help both in terms of taking pressure off of the other components of your application and mitigating your GPA. You are coming from a competitive demographic, so it's quite important.

Thank you that's really helpful. Just a few follow ups (please let me know if I am wrong anywhere):
- From what I have heard from some people is that Oxford is more for PhD students and usually require very strong academical background. Isn't that disadvantageous for me given my low gpa?
- Any views on UCL? Heard mixed reviews (Overall I feel it's a decent option considering I want to work in London)
- HEC MFin has a max limit on workex (3Y), INSEAD Mfin is relatively new (however they do have a Executive Mfin program with minimum workex of 3-4 years)
- This can be very subjective but would you rate Imperial Mfin ahead of UCL? or at par with some of the other top options in UK?
