J - x stamps
M - 2x

after giving 6 stamps to J
2x-6=x+6+8
x=20

M - 2x=40

IMO

We can create the equation:

2J - 6 = 8 + (J + 6)

J = 20

So Mike had 2 x 20 = 40 stamps originally.

Answer: E

Given: Mike has twice as many stamps as Jean has. After he gives Jean 6 stamps, he still has 8 more stamps than Jean does.

Asked: How many stamps did Mike have originally?

Let Mike and Jean have m & j stamps respectively

Mike has twice as many stamps as Jean has.
m = 2j. (1)

After he gives Jean 6 stamps, he still has 8 more stamps than Jean does.
m-6 = j+6+ 8
m = j +20. (2)

From (1) & (2)
j = 20
m = 40
