For my MBA application I will be combating a sub 3.0 GPA, from an admissions stand point does MOOC's or MOOC certificates hold any merit versus, say a community college course for credit?
Just curious as I have noticed Harvard, Wharton, and Yale to name a few now offer their first-year MBA courses this way..
A Massive Open Online Course (MOOC; /muːk/) is an online course aimed at unlimited participation and open access via the web. In addition to traditional course materials such as videos, readings, and problem sets, MOOCs provide interactive user forums that help build a community for students, professors, and teaching assistants (TAs) Examples via https://www.mooc-list.com/

According to the above article, graded coursework > MOOCs (although MOOCs are better than nothing). On one hand, I can see the adcoms point that MOOCs aren't graded and therefore don't tell them much. But on the other hand I don't want to spend money on a course that I could take for free for a marginal benefit in the adcom's eyes. I am trying to make the same decision myself and would love to hear others' thoughts on this.

That's a great question - graded courses will always trump MOOCs when it comes to building alternative transcripts if you have flags. Say, for example, you didn't too well in Calc. If that's something you're trying to remedy, you need a graded course to show the adcom, "look, I know I didn't too hot the first go around, but I retook it and rocked it - so don't worry, I have calc covered!"
However, MOOCs are beginning to gain momentum and gain real credibility. They're useful for folks who are trying to demonstrate passion or show they're committed to a career change of some fashion (among other things). So that way, an adcom can see that you're putting time and effort behind the words you're saying.
They're all tools, and depending on the job, you're going to use a different tool. Let me know if you have any questions!
