More X than Y can have many forms. Please help on how to construct these forms.
I wanted to share my notes in case someone found it useful.
1) Plants are more efficient at acquiring carbon than fungi - ambiguous the sentence could mean 2 things: A)------- Plants are more efficient at acquiring carbon than fungi are efficient B)------- Plants are more efficient at acquiring carbon than at acquiring fungi. This sentence does not seem to make sense and we could reject it, but not ambiguous at the first place would have been a better choice.
2) Plants are more efficient at acquiring carbon than fungi are - correct 3) Plants are more efficient at acquiring carbon than are fungi - correct
It is better to use 3
One additional difficulty GMAT adds to above is comparing 2 time periods
4) Analysts expect automakers to set dividends more conservatively than they have been setting <recently> - correct
we cannot omit "setting" because ellipsis rule allows omission only if the exact word is repeated. to set and setting are used here
same case with below sentence:
5) Analysts expect automakers to set dividends more conservatively than they have been setting <recently> - correct
5A) Analysts expect automakers to set dividends more conservatively than they have been setting <recently> - correct
6) union members are less likely than nonunion members <are >to be enrolled in lower-end insurance plans

A I am not sure what "more than ...." is modifying
