remember one rule: if a->b, then it not neccessarily b->a.

generous ---most---> good ----all---> good listener
self cent ---some---> parents |

D) some self centered are good, and all good are listeners. so some listeners must be self-centered. correct!!

"Yet all good parents share one characteristic: they are good listeners." - this suggests that being a good parent is SUFFICIENT for being a good listener. In other words, if this statement is true and we know someone is a good parent, we can infer that this person is probably also a good listener.

Notice that this does NOT necessarily imply that the opposite is true. In other words, just because a parent is a good listener, does not necessarily mean they are a good parent. In fact, even if the statements in the passage are all true, it is possible that MOST parents who are good listeners are actually BAD parents. Being a good listener might be necessary for being a good parent, but it is not necessarily sufficient.

Given that "most parents who are generous are good parents" and that being a good parent means you are probably a good listener, we can properly infer that most parents who are GENEROUS are also good listeners, but we CANNOT properly infer that most parents who are GOOD LISTENERS are also generous.

I hope that helps! And we have an article about the distinction between necessary vs. sufficient on its way, so keep an eye on our Topic of the Week series.

Question: Is there conditional reasoning present in this stimulus? It seems more like a fact set than a stimulus with conditional reasoning.

Most parents who are generous are good parents, but some self-centered parents are also good parents. Yet all good parents share one characteristic: they are good listeners.

If all of the statements in the passage are true, which one of the following must also be true?

Inference question

Pre-thinking

Inference#1: parents who are generous and good parents are good listeners
Inference#2 Self centered parents who are good parents are good listeners

POE:

(A) All parents who are good listeners are good parents.
Not necessarily

(B) Some parents who are good listeners are not good parent.
How could we know?

(C) Most parents who are good listeners are generous.
Could or could not be

(D) Some parents who are good listeners are self-centered.
In line with our pre-thought inference #2

(E) Fewer self-centered parents than generous parents are good listeners
Cannot be inferred

If all of the statements in the passage are true, which one of the following must also be true?

(A) All parents who are good listeners are good parents. - WRONG. Reversal is not true, not necessarily.
(B) Some parents who are good listeners are not good parent. - WRONG. Somewhat similar to A but on a smaller scale. Good parents are good listeners but reverse may or may not be true.
(C) Most parents who are good listeners are generous. - WRONG. There is no such relation that can be established.
(D) Some parents who are good listeners are self-centered. - CORRECT.
(E) Fewer self-centered parents than generous parents are good listeners - WRONG. A comparison is not inferable.

Answer D.
