Hi,
I tried my luck with my first AWA today. i am not sure how it has turned out.
I would like some one to review it, so i know where i stand before i start practicing.
Thanks in advance.
Here is my trial..

Argument:
"The following appeared in a report presented for discussion at a meeting of the directors of a company that ||
manufactures parts for heavy machinery: ||
“The falling revenues that the company is experiencing coincide with delays in manufacturing. These delays, in turn, ||
are due in large part to poor planning in purchasing metals. Consider further that the manager of the department that ||
handles purchasing of raw materials has an excellent background in general business, psychology, and sociology, ||
but knows little about the properties of metals. The company should, therefore, move the purchasing manager to the ||
sales department and bring in a scientist from the research division to be manager of the purchasing department.” ||
Discuss how well reasoned . . . etc."
My AWA:
In this argument, the author owes the failing revenues that the company was experiencing, to the delays in manufacturing, which in turn are largely due to poor planning in purchasing
metals. This argument is extremely vague for many reasons.
First, The author assumes that the failing revenue was due to the product manager's lack in the knowledge of metals and properties, which has led to poor planning in purchasing metals. This statement is a stretch. The delay could have occurred due to various other reasons. For instance, the logistics of purchased metals to reach the company's garage could have consumed more time than expected. Moreover, The delay could have been at the manufacturing factory, from where the metals were purchased.
Next, The author blindly decides that the product manager should know the properties of metals to perform well in his job. There are a lot of other skills that make a person a better product manager. For example, a manager should have leadership skills. Also, He should be knowing in detail, what the company is trying to manufacture. The author fails to establish a connection between few other sought after skills in a product manager.
Finally, In conclusion the author suggests that the company should appoint a scientist in replacement to the current product manager, so that there is a reduction in delays and thereby boosting revenues of the company. To establish that, the author has to provide strong evidence against the product manager and his skills. Also, he has to analyse more on how the revenues of the company failed before attributing it to the delays in manufacturing.
