Hi oyasumipp,

To start, a 550 is an absolutely achievable Score Goal - and on Test Day, you do NOT need to correctly answer any questions that you think are too hard or too weird, but you do need to keep the little mistakes to a minimum on everything else (especially the questions that you CAN correctly answer).

Before I can offer you the specific advice that you’re looking for, it would help if you could provide a bit more information on how you've been studying and your goals:

1) How many hours do you typically study each week?
2) Since you have been studying for 5 months, have you taken any of these CATs/mocks more than once?
3) Did the 'local course' you mentioned provide any of its own study materials?
4) When are you planning to apply to Business School (if it's soon, then what specific application deadline(s) are you facing?)?

Dear oyasumipp,
your verbal score is fine; you have to improve a bit your Quant score, and such move will help you to ace your aim 550+.
If self-studying approach does not work, you can take the online course. There are abundance of platforms that provide quant and verbal course, and reviews most of them are presented here. I would suggest to take TTP course because its well-structured study plan and unique approach already have helped me to ameliorate my Quant score. You need to not only study the concepts but also practice and maintain the error log; all these steps are highlighted by TTP study plan. You can take its diagnostic test to check where you are.

Hi oyasumipp.

It sounds as if you need to practice quant a lot more than you have, and you can readily increase your GMAT score by mastering one quant topic at a time.

To master a topic, first review the relevant concepts and then answer dozens of practice questions involving that one topic until you get them correct consistently. Start off answering them untimed, and then, as you become more skilled in the topic, seek to speed up to test pace.

Then, move on to the next topic, and do the same thing.

By proceeding in this way, you'll drive your quant score up point by point as sure as day follows night, and you can score 550 or 600 just by increasing your quant score.

If you'd like to increase your verbal score also, see this post on How to Score High on GMAT Verbal.
