My first GMAT attempt in July end, I scored 640 (Q48, V31) and I was not depressed, I was angry. I had purchased the
e-GMAT online verbal course and completed the CR and SC modules(I was pretty good with RC on my own) and had finished the module in one month, just a week before my GMAT. Out of desperation, I wrote to Rajat Sadana and Payal Tandon requesting their help and guidance in knowing where I went wrong. I guess they only respond to students or take their interviews if they have scored above 730. But wait, dont write them off just yet.
I had chosen my next date within 6 weeks of my 1st attempt. The first time, I had taken 15 days off. This time around, I had no more fake excuses left to ask for leave from my manager since I was out of action for a week due to viral fever, just after 10 days of resuming work. So with just about 4-5 weeks on hand, and little help, I had to crack verbal. It was do or die.
Main Advice:: Stick to everything OFFICIAL. GMAT has a typical way of framing their verbal questions. After you have solved the OG and verbal review twice over, you will be able to tell the difference. Take only the official tests. Buy the additional two tests and solve them. Even if it means that some questions will repeat. No other test (computer adaptive or not) can estimate your performance within 20-30 points.
First line of action: Find my weakness: SC. I started redoing the entire OG and Verbal review. But this time, I went topic wise as was in the
eGMAT SC module. I solved 5 questions at a time (doing 20-30 questions a day) taking time to review my mistakes from the official answers. At the end of the day, I used to sit down and watch all the explanation videos from
eGMAT for my wrong answers. This helped me bring a focused thought process in approaching the SC questions. After solving the entire official question bank, I again resolved the questions which I had got wrong and watched its videos again. I was studying an hour in the morning and about 3-4 hours every night. Took practice exams on weekends.
I alternated between RC and CR, whenever I got bored of SC.
For CR, Whiplash's guide is really good to get you a start. Do refer it.
Just a week before my exam I almost knew all OG questions by heart. So I started searching for new official questions.
This is where the 'Everything Official' guides by Souvik really helped.
The G-Day arrives. My exam was at 5 pm. Not my favorable time. But I took what was available. I solved some 'new' questions from Souvik's pdf just to get in to the groove.
I listened to my favorite music on loud on the way to the exam centre.
You must have realised I havent mentioned studying quant. That's my only regret. I didnt give it enough time and ended lowering my score in Quant by 3 points
But I do recommend the GMATclub quant book. It really covers exactly what we need to know to take GMAT.
But, my overall score read Q45, V40. It was a bitter sweet moment.
