BackgroundI am an Indian Male Engineer candidate from Bangalore, India, working in tech product management for ~4 years. It was in the Jan 2023 when I started prepping for the GMAT exam. Before starting my prep, I was very keen on getting at least a 750.
Initial Preparation – Another Online Coaching ServiceI started off with another online coaching service as it had all the OG material compiled into a single platform. I initially assumed this would be sufficient for me. I went through the course materials and practiced lot of OG questions from the platform but since this platform did not give me a guided plan (weekly plan with timelines and milestones), my preparation was on and off. Due to this, I took 6 months to write give my first attempt at the GMAT in July 2023. I had followed the wrong approach of going for "Quantity over Approach" and had exhausted all OG questions, had taken all the GMAT Prep official mocks (some more than once), had also signed up for lot of other mocks like GMAT Club,
Expert Global and Manhattan. I did not have good focus or guidance here and going for so many mocks was not the right solution as I was not focussing on the approach.
e-GMAT - A Game ChangerAfter giving my first attempt in Jul, I got a 700. My first attempt was quite bad as most of the verbal questions went over my head and I was lucky to get a V37. I honestly thought I would get worse as I was not at all confident while selecting my answers. When I saw the score, I knew I had to write the exam a second time.
On my way back from the exam center, I was researching test prep companies and came across e-GMAT. After reading about them, I setup a call with their sales staff the next day and signed up on the very same day after paying the fees.
What stood out for me from e-gmat was: 1) I entered my target scores and got a timeline of how to plan my prep, 2) I was keen on a mentor to help me with the process and 3) I needed new questions as I had exhausted the OG questions and E-GMAT boasted a huge library of questions.
I immediately started my preparation with E-GMAT and was keen on giving my second attempt in 2 months.
My Verbal Preparation
1. Master Comprehension – The foundational course under Verbal. This helped me build some of the unspoken fundamentals. What really benefitted me was the pause points and speed of reading the sentences. This immediately helped me with RC and CR.
2. Sentence Correction – SC was always a stronger section for me. But, the meaning-based approach was a game-changer. Also, the practice questions and the cementing quizzes offered by E-GMAT were of top quality and very similar to the official exam. By solving the cementing quizzes, I was confident I can take on the 700+ level GMAT questions.
3. Critical Reasoning – Similar to the meaning-based approach in SC, the pre-thinking approach in CR is another powerful technique. I had never applied this before in my previous attempt and developing a pre-thinking approach was very key in improving my accuracy and confidence in solving CR questions.
4. Reading Comprehension – What really helped me in RC was that I learned the main point questions. This was one place where I was always making mistakes and choosing the wrong options. E-GMAT did a wonderful job in pointing out how to eliminate such close options and always choose the right answer.
My Quant Preparation
For Quant, Akash (my mentor) had asked me to follow a plan. This was very helpful as I already had a Q49 in quant and this plan helped to identify my weaker areas and focus/study only those topics which saved a lot of time for me. The adaptive courses (P.A.C.E) was very crucial for me to get through quant quickly but also it ensured that I am covering the necessary topics with the right level of accuracy.
Scholaranium
One of the unique features of e-GMAT is its Scholaranium platform, which is a tool designed to help you track your progress and identify areas that require more practice. Scholaranium provides a large number of questions organized by difficulty level and topic, allowing you to focus on the areas that you need to improve.
Mocks
For mocks, I just relied on the SIGma-X mocks.
Below were my mock scores –
1st Mock – 710 - Akash gave me good motivation here that it was my first mock and I would only improve from here on. His advice of breaking the entire Quant and Verbal sections into 4 sections and planning how many number of questions I need to get right in each section proved very critical for me. I used this to focus my energy in the exam and made sure to go strong in the first 2 sections.
2nd Mock – 730 - I was happy with this score as I followed the advice from Mock 1 and was able to see the results.
D-Day – 750 (Q50, V41) – Was very confident this time around. I knew I had done well in Verbal and also had a good feeling in Quant. When I saw the score and saw a 750, I was more than thrilled. I could not be happier. I came outside the center and sent a thank you email to Akash and the E-GMAT team for their support and guidance.
Final thoughtsGMAT is a very learnable exam. If one focusses on the right approach and structure to preparing for the exam (like following E-GMAT's course), it is very much possible for one to attain their target score within 2-5 months of prep.
I hope all the GMAT aspirants enjoyed this journey and learned something from it! All the best everyone!
