Okay!
I've read a few things about the benefits of using an error log and I endorse the view completely. From my own experience I've realized that the mere act of solving a problem does not add much to what you already know!
f you want to achieve excellent results, you must learn to do the following for each problem that you do:
1. Classify the problem into the main area and sub-area (e.g. Main Area - Word Translation Sub Area - Rate and Work)
2. Spot hidden traps and tricks involved.
3. Recognize any other question which has nearly the same elements as the current problem when you solve questions in the future.

This is why thorough analysis of the problems that you do is absolutely essential.

In my opinion 200 questions from each category of questions (PS, DS, CR, RC and SC) will sufficiently enable you to perform well on the GMAT, provided you rip-apart all the practice problems that you do and analyze them thoroughly!

Your quant score is pretty good. What did you used to study for the quant section?

I used MGMAT cats and the various other tests only for my quant prep

Hi all,

My aim is to score 700+ on the GMAT but all my efforts have gone in wain as I have taken the GMAT twice and scored

590 and 650(Q48 V31). I am not sure what should be my approach now? should I retake the test or not and if i retake

should I enroll for a prep course? I have not taken any prep course till now.

Study material used for prep.
-OG 11
-OG 12 only the new questions
-MGMAT SC - 3rd edition
-Powerscore CR Bible
-Manhattan Test(both attempts), kaplan free test, Knewton free test, PR free test
-1000SC, 1000CR(only the GMAT question), 1000RC(first 64 passages)--> only during the first attempt.

Scores in all the practice tests:
GMATPrep1 - 690
PR free test - 630(Q44, V33)
Knewton free test - 650(Q47, V31)
Veritas free test - 640(Q49, V32)
MGMAT 1 - 650(Q47, V31)
MGMAT 2 - 640(Q44, V34)
Kaplan free test - 630(Q52, V27)
MGMAT 3 - 590(Q44, V29)
Kaplan CAT 1 - 600(Q50, V29)
MGMAT 4 - 700(Q49, V36)
MGMAT 5 - 680()
Actual GMAT - 650(Q44, V31)

Kindly suggest as to what should be my approach.. Any help is appreciated

Ali.

For a 700+ score you need a good verbal score too. As is apparent, you have always scored 44 and above in Quant (and a 52?) so you are reasonably safe there... Just keep practicing quant questions regularly and try and get into the habit of adopting time saving techniques... This will give you extra time when you face tough Quant questions and you will be able to better handle them...

As for Verbal, you need a focused approach. According to the section(s) you are particularly uncomfortable with, devise a plan... Read up a little on strategies that help many people tackle RC/CR/SC questions e.g. in RC, writing down a couple of words representative of each paragraph is particularly helpful... in SC, almost all errors can be clubbed into 8 types.... if you are lost, actively search for these 8 types of errors to ensure you are not overlooking something... etc.. Then start practicing lots of questions. And as pointed out above, when you solve a question, you don't learn anything new... you only apply what you already know... when you read the explanation for it, you might come across a faster method of solving it or a new concept you were unaware of etc... so analyzing is more important than solving questions...
