Just now I finished GMAT and scored 590 (Q 47 and V 25). I am thoroughly confused as what I should do now. I am having 14 yrs of exp, all through in reputed companies and a graduate in engineering with good academics. I am already holding a senior position in my company. I was aiming for 1 year full time MBA in IIMs or ISB. With this score now I am not sure whether it is worth applying for B Schools.

I have been having trouble to take time off to study as my job is quite demanding. Last year around this time, I wrote the exam and got 450 (Q 36 and V 16). At that time I did not finish the exam (By the time I answered my last question in Quant, the time was over and it impacted my morale in verbal section). I have used the following material for my preparation:
Kaplan Verbal foundation - studied and answered all questions/exercises
Kaplan Math foundation - studied the material
OG 12 all sections completed
OG Verbal and Quant review - completed SC and CR questions

I did not take any practice tests as I did not have enough time. I concentrated on understanding concepts and practiced questions noting down the time I took to understand my pace. My accuracy in Math has been about 80+% during practice and in SC and CR for OG 12 questions was around 65%. Later when I did OG verbal review material my accuracy of SC and CR increased to 75%. I was also doing quite OK on RC with an accuracy of 75+%.

Can any one help me whether I should attempt again and if so, how I can improve my verbal score?

pega,

First of all I noticed a serious mistake on your part. You did not use the MGMAT guides. Please refer to MGMAT SC guide for SC. It seems that is a weakness for you. Also CR seems like a weakness for you. Follow the Powerscore CR bible and implement though strategies over and over. It is good to know that you have a pretty strong quant score though.

Good luck,
Dawgie

Thanks for your reply! I missed mentioning that I did use MGMAT SC and Powerscore RC books. I read MGMAT SC atleast twice. In CR, I think I had issues with Assumption questions and method of reasoning (bold faced questions). Certainly my Quant is strong and English is not my mother toungue, so English is my weak area.

I would suggest going through "Doing Grammar" if you can not identify for what reason you are eliminating an answer choice in sc. Read through the info in this link -studyplan-for-verbal for improving verbal.

besides those suggested, error logs might help pinpoint question types. but you need to first go over all overbal

I have a general Q for the veterans based on his score of Q 47 which is certainly a good score , does the GMAT penalize more heavily on the Verbal side ?

Today I received my Official Score report and I received 5.0 in AWA. This made me feel little better that my written English is not really messed up. Does this increase my chances? Does B-Schools look at AWA Score while evaluating applications?

Though you've scored pretty decent in AWA, I really doubt if they are gonna place much importance on AWA over Q & V scores.

yeah, unforunately, AWA doesn't mean a whole lot. But if you do bad on it, then it does.

I think you should do a more focused review of the subjects and start with the basic Grammar. Once youre done with that, redo MGMAT SC and Powerscore CR. It's all about nailing the concepts and applying it properly. Don't time yourself initially. Get the concepts right, then work on pacing. Use an error log at this point too. Take a few practice tests and get yourself in the right mindset at the end.
