Not many days left to my reattempt at GMAT. However, I will try my best to inculcate as much of suggestions as I can.

How I wish that I had discovered this forum before my first attempt at GMAT.

BB, I would love if you give solid study plan specially for RC as you have given for SC.

So, while writing RC section please keep this in mind that RC troubles non-natives!

I know practice makes a person better, but should one practice all of the OG's? I'm getting tired of seeing similar questions time and again.

Thank Mr. Founder of gmatclub.
It is exactly what I'm looking for.
I still wait for the CR plan because my time for any CR question usually passes 4 minutes :(

SC is by far my weakest part of the GMAT and this is a great start.

Thanks bb. Although I haven't made any serious attempts yet to improve on my verbal score, I'd given two gmat practice tests last year and scored over 35 on my second test. I guess I'll try most of what you've said here anyway, but any additional thing to focus on if you're aiming to score 45+ on verbal? Or let's say, 40+ too?

Excellent post! Another benefit from GMAT Fiction is variety. Reading an SC or CR book all day can mentally exhaust you. But reading a fiction book is a new and different way to improve your verbal skills.

Another helpful activity is re-reading the verbal guidebooks. It's one of the best things that you can do for verbal. Eventually, some of topics become a mere truism. In other words, those topics become second nature to you.

While I probably type this too much, fully read every single single explanation in the OG. Review why one choice is correct and why the others are incorrect. Not only will this allow you to (in a sense) "enter the mind" of the test makers, but it trains you to stay in an active, aggressive mindset. You become more involved with the questions this way. Simply answering a question, looking at the answer, then moving on is passive and can get you in trouble during the test.

And get involved in the verbal forum. Post an answer and defend your choice. Don't just type "A." Again, that's passive and just plain lazy. Tell us why A is correct and why B, C, D, and E are wrong. Even if your answer is basically the same as previous replies, do it anyway! The ability to effectively explain verbal concepts to others is a strong sign that you truly understand the material.

Hello bb,

Thanks for such a wonderful thread, +1 Kudos to you.

I need one advise from you. Last week I gave real GMAT and scored 470(Q32, V19). I have read a number of topics here regarding how to improve verbal score.

I am targeting 700+ ,considering the fact I follow all advise religiously and can devote 100% time and dedication , will it be wiser approach to take a break and re-take so that I can apply in R1 .

Please advise your thoughts . In case if this is not correct approach please advise the correct approach.

Thanks in advance.

Best Regards,
PS

Guys make sure you read a lot. There is no other way to improve verbal. You have to train your eyes, ears, mouth, and hands to read, hear, speak, and write good quality English. But for Gmat exam eyes and hands will do the purpose.

BB: I have started reading but I have a big doubt and I would like to ask you in two contexts : Gmat and Non- Gmat purpose.
How to tackle vocab while reading? Should we just take the gist and ignore the meanings of the words we don't know or we should underline it and learn the word after completing the day's reading or we should stop and check the meaning before moving ahead.

I am also having same doubt as the doubt of Gurpreet. facing similar problem with Vocab. Currently i look for words that i don't understand in an online Dictionary , note them and their meaning & synonyms. But this process takes a lot of time.

Thanks Gurpreet for asking this Q.

I have mentioned this somewhere else - you don't need to study vocabulary just for the sake of vocabulary (unless your English is bad of course) but assuming you have some proficiency, make the judgement as you go. If you encounter a word that does not seem important in James Clavel's Shogun (armor element, for example), then you can skip it but if you are seeing the same word a few times, I would write it out, and make sure you know it.

I actually looked up almost all words (but did not write them down). If i encountered the same word again, I wrote it into my notebook.

So, to answer your question - stop and look it up is my suggestion
