Hi,

I am giving my GMAT on Aug 24th,2017. I roughly have 40 days left for my exam.... Need help on how to improve my score and any changes/recommendations required in my Prep Process.

The Princeton Review tests
CAT 1 : 450 - Q38(23 of 37) V14(18 of 41)
CAT 2 : 590 - Q43(31 of 37) V29(28 of 41)
CAT 3 : 570 - Q40(30 of 37) V29(26 of 41)

I am not sure how accurate these tests are and if required which tests to take up in order to maintain some level of accuracy with the real GMAT

In my prep process going in detail -

Verbal:

SC :
  • I started reading with MGMAT SC (A very useful book) helped me to get through the basics very well. Solved all the problem sets in all chapters.

  • After completing the MGMAT SC, I started working on all the OG SC Questions. Gone through all the explanations given by GMATClub members (hats-off to you people for making such a wonderful thing happen) and noted down take-away from each question.
  • Now I am able to solve the SC questions well compared to previous encounters

CR :
RC :
  • Started reading the MGMAT RC few days back... So cannot really comment much about my prep on this section, but the approach in MGMAT RC looks really helpful.

Coming to Quants: (Will brief it up Quickly)

  • As I needed to brush up my basics I started solving R.S Aggarwal quantitative aptitude.
  • Parallely, I also solved Questions from OG. Solved a few drills given by Princeton Review.
  • Used up MGMAT Geometry as I lack in Geometry concepts.
  • Also maintaining an error log to track all my mistakes in Quants.(Mostly includes 'Silly mistakes' or 'Misinterpreting the Question' etc...)

To conclude, I want to know if the GMAT experts can suggest few prep changes that may be required and also some good sources to actually improve my Quants score. I ideally want to reach 49-51 in Quants but am not finding the proper resources or materials to improve my score.(I have been trying to solve the 700+ Questions from GMATClub Quants forum. But, I find that I am lacking concepts in some of the Quants topics such as Permutations and Combinations,Probability,Statistics).

Similarly, need comments w.r.t improving Verbal(I want to reach 38-40).

Also, can you suggest other tests which I can take up in order to benchmark properly where I stand today w.r.t actual GMAT Exam. I still haven't used up my GMAT Prep exam packs

Thanks in Advance.

Regards,
Eshwar Nag Lanka

And bb..... I cant thank you enough for the help GMATClub is providing ---- Hats-Off to you man

Hi leshwarnag
As I can see , you have plenty of scope and you can improve Q easily.
As you are lacking concepts in Quant then read GMAT club quant book. This is freely available on site.
Read it and start applying concept. Also take GMAT club tests. These tests are specifically for people who want to score Q 49 and above.

For verbal , Please read power score CR bible. This is must book for CR.

After this , take a mock and concentrate on remaining weak parts.
Good luck

Hi Eshwar Nag Lanka,

Since all of the CATs that you've taken so far have been 3rd-party CATs from one company, I'd like to see how you score on one of the Official GMAC CATs. This is important because your scores on your last 3 CATs have been fairly consistent, so if you've gotten "stuck" at this current scoring level, then we need to know for sure (so that we can put together the necessary plan to 'fix' whatever issues you're facing. As such, I strongly recommend that you take one of the Official GMAT CATs next and take it in a realistic fashion (take the FULL CAT - with the Essay and IR sections, take it away from your home, at the same time of day as when you'll take the Official GMAT, etc.). Once you have that score, you should report back here and we can discuss how best to proceed.

Hi EMPOWERgmatRichC,

As discussed I took my GMAT Exam Pack 2 - Test 1 Mock today and the results were as follows :
610 - Q47(22 of 37) V27(26 of 41)

I took the Q-V-IR ordering for my exam.I guess i could have scored better, but was a bit distracted during my Verbal Section.

So, can you provide me details on how to improve or areas to focus on?

Thanks in advance,

Hi Eshwar Nag Lanka,

Based on this recent score, it certainly appears that taking the Quant section early on helped you to score higher in that section. However, your work over the last two weeks has not helped you to improve your Verbal score. A V27 means that you lost significant points in at least 2 of the 3 major Verbal categories (SC, RC and CR) - and you'll have to make some significant changes to how you approach that section (in a relatively short period of time) to hit your goal score in the timeframe that you described earlier.

1) Are you still planning to take the GMAT around the middle of August?
2) Going forward, how many hours do you think you can consistently study each week?

Hi EMPOWERgmatRichC,
To answer your your questions....

1. Yes i am still fixed to take my exam on the same date as some kind of deadline keeps me binded to my study time.
2. From now on I will be able to spend atleast 8 hours per day till my exam.

Hi Eshwar Nag Lanka,

An August 24th Test Date gives you a little over a month of potential study time. Studying 8 hours a day would be a LOT - probably too much - so you have to be careful that you do not 'burn out' before your Test Date. That having been said, you could potentially improve a great deal in the time that you have (unfortunately, it's probably not enough time for you to get to the 700+ level). At this point though, you don't have time to 'waste', so you're going to have to be really efficient with your studies - and that means committing to learning and practicing some new Verbal Tactics.

Based on everything that you've described, I think that you would find the EMPOWERgmat Verbal Score Booster to be quite helpful. Most of our clients finish that Study Plan in under a month, so it would fit your schedule perfectly. During that time, you'll also be able to access any of the Quant resources that interest you. We have a variety of free resources on our site (www.empowergmat.com), so you can 'test out' the Course before setting up an account.

If you have any additional questions, then you can feel free to contact me directly.

Hi Eshwarnag,

apologies for late reply as I was out of station for business trip.
I saw your recent score 610 - Q47(22 of 37) V27(26 of 41).

In my view you are gaining god shape in quant.

Now you have to improve your Q score from 47 to 50/51. This means , you have to concentrate on advance concepts of quant.

My 2 cents on this :

1- First analyse your quant questions in test and see why your answers were wrong. Accordingly , identify weak area and read that concept again and solve few question on that concept to make you feel comfortable.
2- Read once MGMAT quant book advance section only.
3- Solve GMAT club quant tests.Although these tests are a little bit tough but don't get dishearten. Always read the explanation and sooner you will see drastic improvement in your Q score.

You can also solve Jaff sackman extreme challenge quant sets.

For verbal please send me break of question wrong/correct in your mock test then only I will be in position to suggest you .
Thanks

Hi mbaaspirant80,

Thanks for getting back. It really means a lot :)

As you said,
1. I started solving the MGMAT Advanced Quants book and am also trying to learn a lot from my mistakes by maintaining an error log. It really helps to learn the topics I am weak in.
2. Also started practicing the GMAT Club tests. I find them very useful and a lot closer to the Official GMAT OG/Prep Tests Questions.

And coming to verbal, the following is my break up:

CR - (5 out of 11 Correct)
SC - (13 out of 17 Correct)
RC - (8 out of 13 Correct)

Thanks in Advance. Awaiting your response. :)

Hi Eshwar Nag,
IN SC and RC , you have very good accuracy . Please try to maintain this accuracy. In CR , you have to concentrate. Please read power score bible.
IF you have already read power score bible then read its chapter notes available on internet. Incase you find difficulty in finding notes let me know I will mail you.
Also try questions, everything official CR by souvik and also try 700-800 level CR questions.
you have 26/41 correct questions that's should score nearly to 30+ . It seems that you have several consecutive incorrect questions or your low level questions are incorrect. Please pay attention that consecutive questions should not be incorrect . also low difficulty level questions should not be incorrect as GMAC penalises big for that.
30/41 correct means you are near to V40 ( provided low difficulty level questions are not incorrect and consecutive questions are not incorrect)

Thanks

Hi mbaaspirant80,

Thanks for your analysis. It really helps. As you said could you mail me the chapter notes for power score bible as I am not finding a properly combined one in the internet. My mail id id leshwar4@gmail.com.
And yes I got some of the consecutive questions wrong. Will try to work and improve on that and let you know shortly how it goes.

Hi mbaaspirant80,
I also have a query regarding the 700-800 level questions you asked me to practice.
I saw everything official CR and SC by souvik101990 which has a comprehensive collection of hardest questions from the GMATPREP Software. Do you think it would be better if I start practicing these questions now? As, I have only used the GMATPREP Exam pack 2 - Test 5 till now.... nothing more than that from the GMATPREP Software. And might not get proper score if these questions get repeated
