Hello!! :-D

I need advice with my current plan and pace of studying as I want to break the 700 barrier. However, I feel as if i am stuck with my current score and i need to bump it up.

Before moving ahead I would like to give a brief background regarding my journey till here.

I started private coaching for GMAT in November 2017 and soon realized that i had wasted my money. I finished the classes and only started studying in December. I anticipated that one and a half month would be a decent amount of prep time considering full time studies. Meanwhile, since the second deadline for admissions was approaching i went ahead and booked a test date for January 24. In that one and a half month, i focused only on Quants and solved the OG2018 and studied very little of verbal, also from OG, as I was under the impression that i could manage Verbal (Biggest mistake ever). I used up the two free CATs from GMAT prep software and scored a disappointing 500(Q35 V24) and 520 (Q42 V20). I knew i was in deep trouble and still decided to go ahead and give the attempt. On the test day, i was in worse shape as i was scared, panicked, under prepared and scored a dismal 460 (Q41 V15). Honestly, till that point i had no guidance, no help and felt very helpless.

Post First Attempt:

Decided to tackle Verbal first. I read several posts on GMAT club regarding how to improve on Verbal and went through the various study plans. I started solving 5 RC's everyday. For SC, i read the MGMAT SC Book but also purchased the Aristotle SC Grail. For CR, I bought the Powerscore Bible and also went through MGMAT CR. I have invested almost the whole of February and first half of March in Verbal Preparation.
Reading Comprehension- i think i have fairly improved a lot.
Sentence Correction- I all the rules memorized but struggle a bit with meaning based sentences.
Critical Reasoning- I do well at few question types but not so good at others.

Moving on to Quants:
I felt i should brush up my basics again. I downloaded the GMAT Club Math Book and went through the whole PDF and at the same time made flash cards for formulas i knew i would forget. I practiced the OG again and timed the questions. Post that, i started solving questions from Gmat Club question banks, sometimes topic wise and sometimes difficulty wise. I can manage both Sub 600 level and 600-700 level questions within the two min time frame. It is the 700-800 level questions i am struggling at. Besides this, i have MGMAT guides for Quants too and i have covered only a few of them.

CAT scores:

MGMAT 2: 580 (Q39 Q31)
MGMAT 3: 580 (Q38 Q32)
MGMAT 4: 550 (Q39 V28)
Official GMAT free software(restest): 620 (Q42 V34)
Official GMAT Exam pack 1: 610 (Q43 V31)
MGMAT 5: 600 (Q41 V32) {Given two days back with the new shorter version of the Exam}

I have analysed all the above CATs and made an error log and reviewed my mistakes.

Where i think i am going Wrong :( :
- I spend a little too much time on the initial few questions and as a result panic and rush at the end, in turn making mistakes.
- Do i need more practice in both sections? or do i need to still work on basics?
- How much more time should i spend studying? (since i am not working right now i can study full time)
- Should i solve questions difficulty wise or topic wise? and should i purchase any more books?

I really need some tips, suggestions, comments, insights and any help with strategies. There is something that i am missing here and a new perspective on this situation will be highly appreciated.
Thanks in advance!! :-)

Hi,

Best thing about your prep score is that you have more score in GMAT prep than MGMAT tests. MGMAT tests inflate your score a bit and gives you higher score. GMAT prep is correct indicator of your score. It's good that you have reviewed your CATs and made and error log as well. Things that you are going through is very common. Since you have analysed your CATs, and you better know your weaknesses, you should start by solving the questions from easiest level to the harder ones. Lowest level questions are very much underrated but they help you in building strong foundation.

As you are free full time, you can study for 5 to 8 hours a day, using sufficient breaks. Don't study more than 2 hours in a stretch.

You should work more on your timing issues. Review your mistakes and concepts often, as that will be really helpful for your confidence. Try to improve your accuracy in SC to score high in Verbal.

Hi,

Thanks for your reply!!

I will keep your suggestions in mind. Yes, i need to work on my timing strategies while writing the test.

Hi Manasi1223

I'm not an expert, but I will guide you using my experience studying for the test...

verbal prep takes much more time than quant prep to show score improvement. give it at least another 2 months
Can you tell me your score break up in verbal for your GMATPREP CATs?, scaled score for SC, CR and RC ie

as per the new changes in GMAT, most questions appearing on the test will be from RC, followed by SC and then CR.

so having top notch RC skills is most imp, for RC please read this: https://gmatclub.com/forum/experts-topi ... 41004.html

although it's an article for beginners, it can suit people who are looking for score improvement...
understand each question type thoroughly..and have a strategy for each question type

4 things you should be focussing on:
internalise strategies - you should have a strategy for every question type in each category of verbal...
build endurance - do a set of 45 questions alternate days and time yourself for 75-80 minutes(max)
simulation of test - weekly you should be taking at least one gmatprep CAT and one unofficial(good for practice)...and on days you don't do the endurance activity i suggested above, you should at least do 25 questions on a timer...
target weak areas-find out your weakness in specific type of questions. one more important thing to know that put most of your energy, in questions that are most frequently tested on gmat and those that you are weak in...

PLEASE STICK TO OFFICIAL RESOURCES FOR VERBAL,
this I say, because it is important to develop a gmat ear, if you use other resources too frequently, you might not be able to familiarize yourself with the language used on gmat
if you run out you can use LSAT material for RC and CR..
there's plenty of official material on gmatclub and you can create your own practice sessions using these filters: https://gmatclub.com/forum/search.php?view=search_tags

don't solve gmat prep(gmac's software) questions on gmatclub, because then you'll familiarise yourself with those questions and might get an inflated score on gmatprep CATS. use official guide and verbal review.

you can create timed sets for CR + SC, by saving questions to PDF, you'll find that link next to each SC/CR question and you'll find the list here: https://gmatclub.com/forum/ucp.php?i=wo ... _questions

in order to improve, it is of utmost importance that you know your weakness, you can do that best by reviewing your practice CATs
please read this on how to review CATS: https://gmatclub.com/forum/how-to-revie ... 67118.html

RC
check which kind(science, social science, business, humanities) of passages you make most errors or find difficult to comprehend
then check, which question type(primary purpose, inference, detail etc) you make most errors on

then relearn the concepts of those types and practice questions of those types, and review thoroughly...check expert answer explanations on gmatclub, do this on a regular basis

CR
same follows for CR check which type(assumption, weaken, evaluate, etc) of questions u are answering repeatedly incorrectly...
relearn concepts and practice in a timed setting, followed by thorough review

Same strategy for SC

You can relearn your concepts by checking the verbal resource here: https://gmatclub.com/forum/verbal-guide ... urces-389/
it is a compilation of the best verbal resources on gmatclub, see what works for you, try things, and stick to what works...join gmatclub chat on wednesday evening at 8pm with ur doubts, mostly there will be an expert who will help you with specific doubts...

As for Quant, gmatclub CATs are one of the best resources...and the interface is amazing, it logs your mistakes, it tells you which areas you're weak in...
and answer explanations are quite good...you can use it to target ur weak areas, but don't solve too many questions of a type...always do a mixed bag and for specific question you can always solve questions from gmatclub's abundance of material for specific topics:

here's how to best use the club tests: https://gmatclub.com/forum/how-to-use-g ... 20802.html

all the best...

Hi Manasi1223,

Based on your recent CAT Scores, you've made some nice improvements since your initially began your studies. GMAC has publicly stated that the Official Score that you earn on Test Day is within +/- 30 points of actual ability. Assuming a similar 'swing' in how your CATs function, your recent CAT score results show that you essentially performed the same each time (about 590 +/- a few points). Many Test Takers who use a 'book heavy' study approach end up getting 'stuck' at a particular score level - and since your recent studies have been book heavy, it's possible that this has happened to you as well. By extension, to hit your Score Goal, you'll likely need to invest in some, new non-book resources that emphasize Tactics.

Before I can offer you the specific advice that you’re looking for, it would help if you could provide a bit more information on your timeline and goals:

1) When are you planning to retake the GMAT?
2) When are you planning to apply to Business School?
3) What Schools are you planning to apply to?

Hello,

thanks for your reply!!

Here are the answers to your questions:

1) When are you planning to retake the GMAT? and 2) When are you planning to apply to Business School?

Since i am studying for the last 2-3 months, i assumed i would be prepared by now. I wanted to take the test by mid May, but looks like i will need more time. I am planning to apply for the January 2019 intake and I think i have time on hand to prepare and take a test. So i need some guidance as to how much more time should i invest?

Thanks again.

Hi ENEM,

Thanks for your reply!! Your suggestions will be very helpful.

As per the latest GMAT Prep CAT i gave about 10 days back, i scored V31 (SC-36, RC-35 and CR-15).

Wrt Reading Comprehension, i practiced 5 RCs everyday for about a month and half. I am taking about 8 mins to read and solve a passage. In my last mock i got 2 incorrect answers out of 13 (Do i still need to reduce my reading time?)

Wrt Sentence Correction, i have practiced a lot of questions from OG and Aristotle. I got 6 incorrect answers out of 17 in the last mock.
However, i think i need more practice in SC

Wrt Critical Reasoning, i have to practice much more!!

Also, i have not been solving Gmat prep or Exam pack questions while solving from Gmat Club question banks, as you correctly mentioned that i could see them in the CATs.

My concern is whether i am on the right path and should keep practicing or do i need some big changes in the preparation or duration? Also how much time should i invest in and book a date considering i want to apply for January intake!!

Thanks again.

Hi Manasi1223,

Assuming that these CAT Scores are an accurate reflection of your current skills, raising a 590 to a 700+ will likely take at least another 2-3 months of consistent, guided study - and you'll have to make significant improvements to how you handle BOTH the Quant and Verbal sections. You appear to have plenty of time to study - which is good - but since it's possible that you may have gotten stuck at this score level, you have to decide how efficient you want to be with this next phase of your studies. You could continue to study as you have been (and potentially 'fix' all of the areas that need fixing on your own) or shift directly to new practice materials that will help to you learn and practice the proper Tactics.

1) Going forward, how many hours do you think you can consistently study each week?

Hi Manasi,

I won't be the right person to comment on applications... But I know for sure that the higher your score the higher the chance of you getting admitted to a higher ranked college...so your primary focus should be score improvement

Another 3 months of intensive study should likely help...

I've already mentioned how you can improve your score on individual topics...

5 passages a day is very good... But give equal importance to bring about improvement in weak areas

All the best
