Hi Daniel,

Going by your scores, I feel that you have a combination of problems both in:

1. Understanding the fundamentals
2. Timing issues during the CATs.

The best approach to tackle this is to strengthen your fundamentals. You can take up any material you want and go back to revise the concepts. This will enable you to answer questions quickly and in turn improve your time management in the CATs.

Did you finish all the questions in the actual GMAT exams? There is a huge huge penalty if you do not complete the exam. So in your next CAT (which you should take after going through the concepts again) make sure that you finish all the questions.

You still have plenty of time till your GMAT date and surely can achieve your target score.

Hi Daniel,

With the Round 2 deadlines at the Schools you're considering, you still have plenty of time to continue studying and retake the GMAT. Based on what you've described, I think that you should push back your Test Date (and not take the GMAT in September). Since you've been studying for some time, you've likely developed a number of 'bad habits' - to raise your GMAT score, you're going to have to learn some new tactics AND we're going to have to work to get you out of those habits and into new 'good habits.' This will likely take some time.

Thankfully, a 590 isn't that far away from a 670+, but to help you overcome the issues that you've described, you're likely going to have to invest in some new resources.

How many hours do you spend on your studies during a typical week?
When you took these CATs, did you take the ENTIRE CAT (including the Essay and IR sections)?

Hi Rich,

When you say "you're likely going to have to invest in some new resources" are referring to signing up for another program or getting another book? What I have been using to study is the 2016 GMAT Official Guide, the 2015 Kaplan GMAT book, and I also have a Magoosh membership. I don't have a problem getting an additional resources but I just clarify that's what you were referring to.

Currently I would say that I'm studying between 12-15 hours most weeks, sometimes more and sometimes a little less than that depending on how busy I'm with work, family, etc. Regarding the CAT exams I used to always take the entire exam but the last few I've been skipping the essay and sometimes the IR section.

Hi Daniel,

Yes, when I mentioned that you might need to invest in some new resources, I am referring to another GMAT Course. Since you're currently stuck in the 500s, the combination of resources that you're using is NOT helping you to get beyond this level. You'll almost certainly need to learn some new tactics (which will require that you follow a different Course). By pushing your Test Date back, you'll also give yourself the extra time that you need to learn and properly practice those tactics.

Once you get back to taking your CATs, you really MUST take the FULL CAT each time (including the Essay and IR sections), in a realistic and test-like fashion. Taking the CATs in any other way will lead to an unrealistic score result AND you won't be properly training yourself to face the Full GMAT on Test Day.

Rich
