Faults..
1) Tense issue
The expectations would be before the results were out, so HAVE is incorrect and should be replaced by HAD.
2) Neither is singular..
Here the construction should be 'Neither of Plural noun" and should be followed by a singular verb.

D corrects the two errors

Don't you think expectation must be before the results were out , and it doesn't need 'had' to highlight that?

A. Subject verb error. Were should be was. Verb tense error, the entire sentence is in past, have expected is incorrect.
B. The second part should be- Neither of the result was what the researchers had expected.
C. Verb tense error. Result should be resulted.
D. Correct. Past perfect has been properly used to show the researchers expectation was prior to the result of the experiment.
E. Have expected is wrong.
D is correct

Yes, expectations are before the result and that is why we have to denote the two time periods through PERFECT tense, as there is/are no words in the original sentence that separates specific times.

You can avoid PERFECT tense when you use words, such as before, after etc, that themselves clearly give us two time periods.
He had finished his education in India before he moved to LA.
This can be written without past perfect as..
He finished his education in India before moving to LA.

The answer is (D) . Let me illustrate the process I followed :

Meaning : Researchers expected something , result did not turn out likwise .

Since we have a comparison of a timeline and both are happening in the past , we need to have something that demonstrates the timeline . Past perfect generally is the most apt to illustrate the timeline of something that happened at past .

Here Past perfect refers to what researchers expected , and the past is used to mention the result of the experiment that appeared at a later point of time

Hence (D)

OFFICIAL EXPLANATION



The correct answer is (D).

In the original version, the shift in time frame from past (were) to present (have expected) is confusing and illogical. Also, the syntax obscures the intended meaning; specifically, one could interpret neither result of the two experiments to mean that each of the two experiments had two results; but this is clearly not the intended meaning. Finally, the plural verb were does not agree in number with its singular subject neither result. Choice (D) remedies all of these problems.
