I had a doubt, isn't this question make a cause and effect relationship saying that the smoke coming out when bag is inflated is the reason why an already terrified driver thinks the car is on fire.
I was confused between option A and D
But I chose A because I thought is is a cause and effect relationship and verb+ing form should be used even though it did not seem to be parallel.
Can someone confirm about the cause and effect relationship in this question.
A case could be made for "making", if there had been no "and" before "making":
....a burst of smoke would appear when the bag inflated, making an already terrified passenger...Since we do have a parallelism indicator "and" in the original sentence, it becomes imperative that "and" should connect two parallel parts. However, "making" is not really parallel with anything in the original sentence.
Look at this sentence:
...a burst of smoke would appear and making...
Notice this isn't even a sentence! This error is fixed by D:
...a burst of smoke would appear and make...
