Hi I have a general question; Does GMAT assume existential import. consider the statement . No writer is illiterate. Inference : Some writers are not illiterate. But if I assume no existential import then I cannot infer. Some writers are not illiterate as no writers exists. Therefore the statement fails to be inferred.
The situation you’re describing is more of something used in the data insights or quantitative questions where for something it’s possible to be positive or negative or zero.
Whereas it’s not possible for a writer to be literate or illiterate or both/neither. That’s it would not apply in this case.
For critical reasoning, you can assume a lot of normal conditions and situations.
For example, you do not need to assume that World War III has happened and wiped out entire population or that some terrible inflation has eradicated the dollar values or anything extreme of that nature. You assume a standard normal business situation for arguments.
PS. In your argument the logical inference it’s quite safe but saying some writers are literate. However, in this situation where the two conditions are mutually exclusive, it may also be safe to assume that all writers therefore are literate.
PPS. However if a question states something like no companies were unprofitable, this does not automatically mean that all of them were profitable because the third state is possible where they broke even.

How to select GMAT focus like IR questions on GMAT club?
IR no longer exists. It has been called data insights for a few years now
Thus you would go to the data insights subforum from the main Form Page.
