Hi everyone,

I am curios if anyone has lodged a complaint to GMAC about the exam conditions and successfully had a revision of their score. I sat the GMAT today in Houston and was part of the pilot program so chose to do the order Verbal/Quant/IR/AWA. For the first 20 to 30 mins of my Verbal I had people coming in and out of the door less than 2m from my desk and the lady would stop and have loud conversations with all the people as they came in. She was cracking jokes at one point with other exam takers (mostly non GMAT takers). It got to the point where I had to physically turn around, wave my hands at her and give her the most viscous "STFU" I could give without physcialy yelling. And after that it didn't stop. I could still hear her after that. Keep in mind I had headphones on and she was talking from the other side of a wall. This had a huge impact on my concentration and timing.

I got out of the verbal and was furious and made my point clear to the staff at the testing center. for the Quant section I took the extra ear plugs which helped. On my verbal my score turned out to be between 4 -7 below what my regular score would be where as my quant was about in line. I have lodged a formal complaint and hoping that my grade will be scaled up but have no idea what to expect...

If this has happened to anyone before and the have been successful or not I would like to know.

hi

i was distracted during my previous retake in a similar manner plus i couldnt start the test for 40 mins or so because PCs shut down. i reported everything right away to GMAC and in a month they solved the issue positively for me and awarded a free retake plus the same pilot program.

i think they also contacted with the testcenter because they sort of welcomed me as a vip tesk taker afterwards =))) and fixed all the drawbacks: air conditioning, people in the room, technical shut downs.

unfortunately I did not cancel the score. I wasn't sure what to do with it and additionally I have deadlines coming up for applications. I will reach out to OfficialGMAT and see what they say.
You don't need to cancel your score to be eligible for either a refund or a free retake. Just ensure that you report the incident within 30 days (of your exam).

No one said that you need to cancel the score in order for a person post a complaint to GMAC. I suggested this as the poster mentioned that he/she got 4-5 scaled points lower in verbal. So obviously the total score would have been lower than what the person was expecting/targeting. In that case, cancellation would make sense as you have 60 days (I think) to reinstate your cancelled scores.

ajitesh, its all good. This is a discussion forum and everyone can put forward their points, I didnt mean to sound rude (apologies if it came across as such). I am curious to see if GMAC will man up and provide a retake to this person who has a genuine reason to be aggrieved. Then again, these things (test center related issues) have become more common than before. Do you know if GMAC is looking into vetting the test centers to see if they are as per the testing policies?

To the OP: please do let Pearson know about this incident. Something similar happened to me when I was taking the GRE. They spoke a little more softly after I told them that they were disturbing me (some of the other test takers looked at them but no one else complained), but it was extremely distracting nonetheless (especially when they laughed amongst themselves: I found that very hard to ignore). Looking back, I wish I had lodged a formal complaint. I still feel slightly unnerved when I think about how the staff there just took the test takers for granted.

We were in a meeting with Pearson (the head of the GMAT product was also there as a representative from the GMAC) recently, and what we heard was not very encouraging. I don't want to say too much here because the experiences of our students may or may not be representative, but the bottom line is that we are currently advising our students in India to avoid taking the GMAT exam at any centers other than Pearson Professional Centers.
