Is it appropriate to write stuff on the note pad while you are talking to the current students or alumni during class visit or coffee chat? What about using a voice recorder?
I had many school visits and many Skype meetings. During schools visits, I saw different patterns of visitors. Some of them were silent observers, others asked simple questions to clarify info presented to them and others who were prepared to this visit. Personally, I researched schools in details and prepared some question in my note pad and add to them during the visit if I wanted. Some of those answers could help you in crafting your essay when asked about why this school. You can refer to your visit. When meeting with adcom representative, it is highly advisable to really take your note pad to show how serious you are and also the info you get maybe intense.
I have not seen anyone record his visit and I would not advise to do for 2 reasons:
1- Recording is highly personal issue and many individuals possible do not want to be recorded in others devices.
2- IMHO, if you do so in front of adcom representative, it might give strange signal because you are assumed to set in class or meeting and take notes. The question of the adcom might be: is this student capable to attend a class and take quick notes? Most of the adcom have sharp eyes. Consider this as business meeting and deal with it. You do not record your business meetings
Good luck
