I've been admitted to NYU Stern and Yale SOM. I have a background in economic consulting and my post-MBA goal is investment banking in NYC.

NYU Stern:
Pros:
(1) NYC location (easy for coffee chats with current bankers, opportunities for experiential learning during the semester, etc.)
(2) Large network in finance especially for IB in NYC (there are a couple people from my current firm who leave each year to go to Stern and later work in banking, so it's a well worn career path.
(3) Great placement in IB, with Stern being a core school for all the BBs and EBs.
Cons:
(1) Somewhat large class size and maybe more competitive culture
(2) Brand may be weaker when looking for post-banking roles outside NYC

Yale SOM:
Pros:
(1) Really liked the culture and broader focus of the school (interdisciplinary curriculum, leaders for business and society, etc.).
(2) Seems to be on the upswing from a rankings and reputation perspective and therefore may be a better long term investment
(3) Placement for IB seems strong at BBs and EBs (from what I've heard)
Cons:
(1) Newer program with smaller alumni base especially in IB (Wall St has plenty of senior bankers from Stern but not so many from SOM - correct me if I'm wrong).
(2) New Haven is fine but I would rather live in NYC.

Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated - thanks!

Go with Stern, program is not that big either. Stern's EQ=IQ culture leads to an amazing student body with great culture!
It is perfectly in line with your goals. And long term: Stern is a big name MBA, been a big name for years and dips in and out of top 10 in some years.
People know Stern, Yale is an amazing school as well, but people still haven't caught up to the Yale Bschool mentality yet (newer program, and only recently making a push in the ranks).

I think Stern is the call...much stronger track record and alumni base in IB. Also, the location will allow you save yourself of the metro north ride down from New Haven to network on the street. NYC is an expensive city compared to New Haven which is the key downfall I see here, but it is a far superior city when it comes to social life and access to things. I would go Stern here.

I think you hit the nail on the head in your post and should just go with your gut. In a situation like this there really is no wrong answer.

NYU is obviously in the city and will really help you network and find an opportunity post grad. Yale has the brand and name cache that will follow you for the rest of your life.

An alternative may be to apply to Columbia or Cornell if you are looking for that Ivy tag, but also want to be close to Wall Street. If you're good enough for NYU and Yale, those two schools might be within your reach.
